There are many ways to get involved as an alumni volunteer! Browse through our volunteer roles below, and fill out our Volunteer Form, indicating your area of interest.

Volunteer Roles:

Alumni Association Board or Committee Member

The Alumni Association of Lakehead University Governance & Nominations Committee is seeking expressions of interest from qualified alumni to fill upcoming vacancies on the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors is responsible for the governance, conduct, and strategic initiatives of the Alumni Association. The Board deliberates decisions related to finances, strategic planning, engagement initiatives, and the selection of alumni for honours. The Board is composed of 15 members, including the President of LUSU as an ex-officio voting member.

Following a nimble organizational structure, the Board delegates some of its deliberations to the Executive Committee and the Governance and Nominations Committee. In addition, each year the Board identifies Working Groups to tackle the yearly strategic priorities of the Association.

If you would like to be considered for a position on the Alumni Association Board of Directors, please complete and submit the nomination form. Nominations for consideration are accepted throughout the year and are reviewed annually by the Board Governance and Nominations Committee.  You may be selected to complete a Skill and Diversity Matrix form, and be interview by the Governance and Nominations Committee.

Alumni Ambassador

The Alumni Ambassador Program is a companion program to the Association's chapter network.

The Alumni Association of Lakehead University (AALU) holds regularly scheduled events in regions where there are significant numbers of alumni. Many events are attended by the president of the University, Alumni Association board members, and other University representatives. The Annual Fund and Alumni Engagement Office invites alumni in these areas to the various events.

Ambassadors are the key resource for all Lakehead alumni in a given region. As such, the AALU will maintain a contact list of all domestic and international Ambassadors on our website, including Ambassador email addresses so you can be contacted.

What do Ambassadors do?

Alumni Ambassadors may be called on to assist with some of the following:

  • Host varsity sporting events
  • Be the point of contact in your geographic area
  • Mentor new grads or alumni
  • Participate in student recruitment events (if applicable)
Mentorship

Mentor current students, new graduates or share career advice with fellow alumni through our LakeheadConnect platform.

Chapter Organizing Committee

Connect with your fellow alumni from a particular geographic location, faculty, department, varsity team or interest group.  Help organize events, socials or networking opportunities and have some fun!

Chapters exist in Toronto, Simcoe County, Ottawa, Calgary, and for our Varsity Wrestling Alumni.  All other locals are served by Alumni Ambassadors.

Guest Speaker/Lecturer or Panelist

There are various opportunities to share your knowledge and experience as a Guest Speaker at a University event. You can share your professional insights at a discussion panel or student event or provide your professional expertise to various recruiting exercises! You can help us by sharing:

  • Which style of speaking opportunity is right for you
  • Areas of the University wherein your knowledge may be most applicable
  • Which medium best suits your topic, style, and area of interest
Event Volunteer

Many of our alumni volunteers prefer flexibility and individualized opportunities. By connecting with our Alumni Team, you can participate in one-time or casual initiatives that you are most interested in, at times and locations that work for you!

  • Support events in your area with set-up or registration
  • Connect with your Faculty for unique engagement opportunities or initiatives
  • Lend your voice to special topic-based focus groups and discovery sessions
Recruitment/Open House Volunteer

How did Lakehead help you get to where you are today?  Join us at our Preview Days, Open Houses, or Ontario Universities Fair (OUF) to share your experience and promote Lakehead to future Thunderwolves.

Reunion Leader

Become a reunion leader or class representative to help plan and promote an affinity-based or class reunion with your fellow graduates!  Reunion volunteers receive support and guidance from the Annual Fund and Alumni Engagement office.

Convocation Marshalls

Marshals help make Convocation a very special day for our graduates!  Each year in both Thunder Bay and Orillia, a number of ceremonies take place, with volunteer tasks including assisting with gowns, organizing graduates in their program groups, and ensuring students process into the ceremonies.
