Math for Teaching (J/I) Part 2
The Department of Professional Development is pleased to offer this non-credit course to students at the Faculty of Education. This mathematics concepts course is focused on the specialized concepts of mathematics as needed by teachers who are either concerned about their mathematical competency and/or wish to strengthen their conceptual understanding of elementary mathematics.
This course is taught following the principles of reform mathematics, consistent with the 2005 revised Ontario curriculum emphasis on teaching for understanding rather than on rote application of rules. It will provide opportunities to deepen mathematical understanding of elementary mathematics through hands-on activities, discussion, problem solving and modeling.
The major topic areas in term 2, also developed through problem-solving and modeling, support understanding of patterning, algebra, integers, and measurement.
A deep and connected conceptual understanding is needed for effective classroom teaching, and hence is a requirement of the program. This course is designed for students needing extra time and support to develop or redevelop such understanding.
