February 16th &17th: An online Activity / Assessment primer - (Lisa O.)

Together in this (approximately) 5-hour course you will explore different activities used during online teaching and learning, and will consider ways that we can assess learning through technology.

This short course is a combination of online self-directed study through D2L (Feb 16th), and synchronous delivery through Zoom (Feb 17th). It is recommended that you allocate approximately 2.5-hour each of the two course days to engage in activities.

Registration is limited to 12 participants and is for Lakehead University faculty and teaching staff. This course runs February 16th and 17th.  Additional details will be provided to registrants prior to February 14th.

February 15-19: Fostering Learning Online (FLO) - The Basics 

Together in this (approximately) 5-hour course on fostering learning online we will look to identify ways of bridging your face-to-face teaching practices to an online learning environment. Critical elements of effective teaching (motivation, communication, and administration) don’t change when you relocate to a virtual classroom environment. The approaches we use to include them DO. This course will help you develop techniques that will protect these elements when you shift to your online classroom.  

This is a short course, which will span 1 week. It is recommended that you allocate approximately 1-hour a day to engage in asynchronous activities. There will be a 1 hour (approximately) live meet-up on the final day. 

Registration is limited to 12 participants and is for Lakehead University faculty and teaching staff. This course runs from February 15 to the 19th.  Additional details will be provided to registrants prior to February 12th.

This workshop will provide an opportunity for relationship building while hearing a short overview of the Indigenous Content Requirement at Lakehead University. A framework for braiding Indigenous approaches into your curriculum, and how the Indigenous Curriculum Specialist can support you in your work will be shared. There will be time for discussion and questions.

This workshop will take participants through the phases of creating and grading assessments in the quiz tool.   Topics will include:

• setting up questions in the various formats

• setting the timing settings of the quiz

• setting up special access times for specific students writing at a different time or who are allowed extra time to write

• previewing the quiz as the students will see it

• viewing the results and statistics of the quiz

• grading any questions that were not automatically graded

• making the grades available to students

This workshop will take a deeper dive into some of the tools introduced in the essentials workshop and introduce course tools that promote collaboration, aid in grading and feedback, and monitor student progress.  Topics will include: 

• creating Groups

• associating groups with the Assignment and Discussion tools

• creating Rubrics

• grading students with Rubrics

• checking User Progress to see how students are progressing through and interacting with your online course

Teaching remotely has its challenges, but it also provides opportunities. At this session, we will share ideas and information about library support for remote teaching and learning. Topics covered include the following: 

• How to create tailored course guides to support student learning
• How to embed stable links to library resources and customizable widgets in your myCourselink site
• How to identify electronic course materials and open educational resources (including disciplinary OER repositories)
• How to integrate information literacy instruction into your course
• Other resources and services available that support off-campus learning (such as virtual reference and research consultations using Zoom)

Riipen - Panel Discussion at Lakehead University

Discover how to turn assignments and hypothetical case studies into a real-world experience for your students, with the support from Riipen, North America's leading experiential learning platform.

Join Maryann Kleynendorst, Experiential Learning Navigator, Faculty of Business Administration and Kevin Brooks, Social Justice Studies Program (MA) Advisor in an interactive and engaging panel discussion sharing their personal experiences using Riipen in their learning environments.  Participants will also receive background information on how Riipen supports experiential learning and a brief overview of the online platform that facilitates this.
