This workshop is designed for instructors who teach large classes and are interested in incorporating active-learning strategies to engage students. Together, we explore various methods to foster interaction, enhance understanding, and promote critical thinking in large classroom settings. Participants will be provided with practical tips and resources to create more dynamic and inclusive learning environments.

Join us for our third conversation related to the Auburn University Teaching with AI course. All Lakehead faculty and teaching staff are welcome to participate.

In this community of practice, we will share and discuss the many ways you’ve integrated AI into your teaching and learning contexts. For example, you may want to share curriculum or assignments for which you’ve used AI tools (or asked students to use them) or GenAI prompts you wrote to create material (content, assignment questions, etc) for use in your courses. We are interested in seeing and sharing any and all the ways AI is being used for teaching and learning at Lakehead! 

Everyone is welcome to join us, whether you're a novice or a more experienced faculty member – and whether you are taking the Auburn course or not. 

In this third session, we seek to continue cultivating a sense of community, empowering educators to explore how we may harness AI's potential to inspire and equip the next generation of learners. 

As a reminder, our hope for this community of practice is to focus on investigating the pedagogical applications of AI in education, with an emphasis on collaborative exploration, sharing insights, and fostering creativity in teaching and learning. Our primary goal is to create a supportive environment for educators, encouraging the positive integration of AI tools in the classroom to enhance student engagement and success. Please note: we are NOT focusing on policing their use.

Please note that this session is capped at 20 participants. 

In this workshop, using circle work, the facilitator will provide an overview of Indigenous teaching methods, touching on oral traditions, storytelling, experiential and land-based learning. Relationship to land and working beside Elders and Knowledge Keepers will also be an important aspect of this workshop.

This workshop will take participants through the phases of creating and grading assessments in the quiz tool.   Topics will include:

• setting up questions in the various formats
• setting the timing settings of the quiz
• setting up special access times for specific students writing at a different time or who are allowed extra time to write
• previewing the quiz as the students will see it
• viewing the results and statistics of the quiz
• grading any questions that were not automatically graded
• making the grades available to students.  

This workshop will be delivered through Zoom and will be recorded. The Zoom join link will be provided to registrants before the event.

In this workshop, using circle work, the facilitator will provide a  brief introduction on the importance of incorporating Indigenous perspectives in education. We will explore the diverse Indigenous worldviews, interconnectedness of land, culture, and identity. We will touch on Indigenous history and the impacts of colonization on Indigenous communities. 

This workshop will take a deeper dive into some of the tools introduced in the essentials workshop and introduce course tools that promote collaboration, aid in grading and feedback, and monitor student progress.  Topics will include: creating groups and associating them with the assignment and discussion tools, creating rubrics, grading students with rubrics, and exploring user progress to learn how students progress through and interact with online courses.

This session will provide an overview of the learning environment and how to use the various tools in mycourselink/D2L to effectively structure your online site to simplify class management and enrich course experiences for students.
