Learning the basics of audio recording and editing can serve as the backbone for a technological shift in instruction. By understanding the fundamentals of “good” quality voice recording to the basics of audio editing, instructors can begin to create a wide variety of content. From instructional podcasts to audio marking responses or even adding voice content to presentations, the Audio for Education workshop will help you develop the basic skills to make a sound start.

Given the surge of AI-assisted technology, such as OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Helperbird,  instructors at LU have expressed concerns regarding how these might impact their teaching. These platforms are open source and widely available to students; therefore, instructors wish to be better prepared with assigning written assignments, their assessment, and ability to maintain academic integrity.

Join us for a panel session on February 7, 10:30-12:00 (room, Zoom, etc.), engaging these issues. Panelists include Dr. Kevin Brooks (Social Justice), Dr. Vijay Mago (Computer Science), Ms. Tenille Brown (Law), Dr. Shikui Wu (Business Administration), and Laxmi Preethi (a PhD student in Computer Science, who is working on ChatGPT's role in pedagogy). The moderator is Dr. Abhi Rao.

This workshop introduces five fast, no-prep activities that engage higher-order thinking skills and can be used in class or online as discussion guides/extenders, brief thinking/writing exercises, and/or simple assignment/research initiators/guides.

This workshop has been designed for those of you who are teaching both online or in-person and are looking to create more attractive course pages that are more visually accessible, align with an instructional flow, and embed interactive and engaging multimedia components.

The purpose of this workshop is two-fold: demonstrating effective instructional strategies for a D2L learning environment, and also functioning as a tutorial on how to place and use multimedia tools to enhance your virtual classroom experience and create interactive opportunities for your students.

As a bonus, we’ll share files and templates to bring these components directly into your own courses.

Because assessment of writing can be a time-intensive task, instructors may be reluctant to incorporate writing in their courses, so this workshop focuses on efficient assessment of writing. Topics covered include effective rubric models and grading strategies.

Together in this (approximately) 5-hour course you will explore different activities used during online teaching and learning, and will consider ways that we can assess learning through technology.

This short course is a combination of online self-directed study through D2L (February 5 2023), and synchronous delivery through Zoom (February 6, 2023). It is recommended that you allocate approximately 2.5 hours each of the two course days to engage in activities.

Registration is limited to 12 participants and is for Lakehead University faculty and teaching staff. This course runs February 5 and 6 2023.  Additional details will be provided to registrants prior to February 1, 2023.

Spice up your lectures with interactive strategies and tech tools. Create a sense of community in your classroom and gather assessment data using the strategies and apps discussed in this workshop. 

This workshop will be delivered through Zoom and will be recorded. The Zoom join link will be provided to registrants before the event.

Together in this (approximately) 5-hour course on fostering learning online we will look to identify ways of bridging your face-to-face teaching practices to an online learning environment. Critical elements of effective teaching (motivation, communication, and administration) don’t change when you relocate to a virtual classroom environment. The approaches we use to include them DO. This course will help you develop techniques that will protect these elements when you shift to your online classroom.  

This is a short course, which will span 1 week. It is recommended that you allocate approximately 1-hour a day to engage in asynchronous activities. There will be a 1 hour (approximately) live meet-up on the final day (February 17, 2023). 

Registration is limited to 12 participants and is for Lakehead University participating in New faculty orientation. This course runs from February 13-17th.  Additional details will be provided to registrants prior to February 13th.

The EMP program is designed to support faculty members who are interested in being better media creators, enhance their learners experiences with effective resources, and distribute media in ways that work for both faculty and learner.

The EdMedia Protégé (EMP) program will improve your capacity to design and deliver media assets – such as infographics, video, graphic organizers, etc. - as an embedded part of teaching and learning. In the first three weeks of the program faculty will work together to better understand how to effectively embed media in activity and assessment, and throughout the remaining time in the program faculty receive one-on-one support from media and learning developers to design media for learning, and develop assets using common tools and techniques. The program will wrap up with a showcase that celebrates the works of EMP participants.

This program runs January 24 - March 17th.  Application deadline is January 13th.

This workshop focuses on teaching strategies for teaching writing in instructors’ respective disciplines. Topics covered include assignment planning for integrating discipline-specific writing in courses and ways to make teaching writing efficient and relevant for students.
