Novel Coronavirus

Information about Coronavirus

Lakehead University is closely monitoring developments regarding the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) and believes it is important to understand the facts about this new strain of coronavirus.

While this new strain of coronavirus is believed to have originated in the Province of Hubei, China, the situation is a global concern that can affect any group of people.

We want our University community to be properly informed so we can act appropriately and come together and support each other.

At this time, our thoughts are with students, faculty and staff who may have family or friends directly affected by the situation.

Please be reminded that October to March of any year is cold and flu season. As is always good practice during this time of the year, wash your hands frequently, stay home when sick, and exercise proper cough and sneeze etiquette to prevent the spread of any illness.

Information shared by Public Health Ontario about the coronavirus states that the risk to Ontarians is considered low, and there are no confirmed cases in Thunder Bay or Orillia at this time.

Health Canada has created an Information Sheet and Frequently Asked Questions web page to inform Canadians about the coronavirus, including:

  • symptoms to watch for,
  • how it may be contracted,
  • how you can protect yourself, and
  • precautions one can take while travelling.

If you believe you have been exposed and are experiencing symptoms, please contact:

  • your local Health Unit — Thunder Bay (807) 625-5900; Orillia (705) 721-7520

  • Telehealth Ontario (1-866-797-0000) , or

  • your Primary Care Provider.

Tell them your symptoms and your travel history and they will provide advice on what you should do.

Ontario Phases Out Red and White Health Card

As of July 1, 2020, red and white health cards will no longer be accepted for Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) services.

Starting this month, individuals with red and white health cards will begin to receive letters letting them know that they will need to get a photo health card at a ServiceOntario centre before the July 1, 2020, deadline.

Photo health cards can easily be obtained for free at ServiceOntario by:

Regardless of an individual's health card status, Ontario's public hospitals cannot refuse to provide services to a patient who is faced with a life-threatening medical emergency.

Red and white card holders who do not convert by July 1, 2020, may be asked to pay up-front for insured health services as their red and white health card will not be valid. Once a photo health card is obtained, eligibility for Ontario health insurance is restored and any payments made for OHIP-insured health services will be promptly reimbursed once a valid health card is provided.

Flu Shot Available

The flu vaccine is available at Student Health and Wellness- call 343-8361 to make schedule an appointment.

Flu vaccines trigger your immune system to produce antibodies that fight the flu virus, but it can take up to two weeks for the antibodies to develop. The sooner you get immunized, the sooner you will be protected.
Although the flu shot is recommended for everyone, it is especially important for people at greater risk of serious illness and to those who provide care to high-risk individuals.
