Lakehead University and Forestry: A Living Legacy
Lakehead’s Faculty of Natural Resources roots stretch back more than 75 years. From its earliest days, the University has played a pivotal role in advancing forestry education, research, and sustainable practices in northwestern Ontario and beyond.
- 1946: Founded as Lakehead Technical Institute
- 1948: First forestry diplomas offered in Forest & Mining Technology
- 1957–1962: Transitioned to a degree-granting college, and then a university
- 1965: Bachelor of Science in Forestry program begins
- 1971–1973: First degrees authorized and awarded
- 1977: Master of Science in Forestry launched
- 1994: Faculty of Natural Resources Management established
- Today: The Faculty of Natural Resources offers Bachelor of Science in Forestry, Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management, course-based Master of Natural Resources Management (16 months or 24 months of Transatlantic Forestry Master), thesis-based Master of Science in Forestry and PhD in Forest Sciences
Lakehead remains northwestern Ontario’s only comprehensive university, equipping the next generation of professionals to manage forests, ecosystems, and natural resources in ways that serve both communities and the land.
