Keewatinase Hiring Priorities

Keewatinase prioritizes the hiring of self-identified Indigenous instructors with specialized teaching experience and/or Master’s-level education. When formal credentials differ from this priority, extensive classroom teaching experience and community-based knowledge are strongly valued. We also actively seek to mentor Indigenous graduate students and create opportunities for them to gain teaching experience within our programs.

Our hiring processes emphasize Indigenous community-based experience and Indigenous ways of knowing, including working with communities, understanding community structures, knowledge of ceremony, Aki-based (land-based) learning, Indigenous languages, and the ability to integrate Indigenous culture into pedagogy while meeting curriculum and legislative requirements. Specialized research knowledge related to Indigenous communities is also valued.

While priority is given to Indigenous candidates and those with experience in Indigenous schools, non-Indigenous instructors may be considered when they demonstrate direct experience in Indigenous communities, knowledge of Indigenous ways of knowing, and cultural awareness. Consistent with the Keewatinase vision, mission, and values, we aim to model educational environments grounded in family, community, and healing, which may involve both Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators.
