FAQs

When can I apply?

Transfer students interested in applying to Lakehead University are encouraged to submit their application before the recommended March 1 deadline. For most programs, applications will be accepted after the deadline pending space availability.

How do I find out how my transfer credits fit into my program at Lakehead?

Your academic advisor will inform you of transfer credits awarded and how they fit into your program of choice. Whenever possible, we identify an exact equivalent for the courses taken elsewhere. Where there is no exact equivalent, we may assign an unspecified credit in the general subject area (for example, a first year half credit in History, HIST 1-10). This means that while we do not offer exactly the same course, we do offer courses in the same subject area at the same level that meet an elective required for degree completion. In many cases, credits completed more than five years ago are considered for unspecified credit unless course content is deemed equivalent to current curriculum. In most programs, you may use unspecified credits to fulfill elective requirements. We also encourage you to review our pathways listing to explore how your current or past studies align with Lakehead’s degree program.

Can you evaluate my transfer credits before I apply?

Applicants to Lakehead University who have previously attended a postsecondary institution are automatically evaluated for transfer credits. There is no transfer credit application. We’ll evaluate your application for transfer credit once an official transcript of your previous post-secondary institution(s) has been received. When required, our team will request a copy of the institutionally prepared course syllabi for assessment.

What year level will I be placed into once my transfer credit assessment is complete?

This is dependent on the number of course equivalents awarded.

What are course syllabi and how do I submit them?

A course syllabus is the detailed, structured outline of a course that is usually composed by the instructor or department of said course, and distributed at the start of each term.
Course syllabi should include:

  • Learning outcomes
  • Course number and name (i.e. English 1100)
  • Number of hours of lecture and lab
  • Number of credit units
  • Name of sending institution
When will my transfer credit assessment be finalized?

Please expect your evaluation to take up to 8 weeks once all documentation has been received. Refer to your offer of admission for additional requirements. Once a transfer credit evaluation has been completed, you’ll be notified via your Lakehead University email account.

Once registration opens, you can refer to your "My Progress" tab in the student portal to view how your transfer credits work towards your Lakehead degree requirements.

How do I know if I’m a transfer student or a mature student?

A transfer student is someone who has previously attended college or university or is currently enrolled in college or university.

A mature student is someone who hasn’t studied full-time in two years, hasn’t attended university, and has completed less than one year of college.

What if I disagree with my transfer credit assessment?

If you have questions regarding your transfer credit evaluation, please connect with our team of advisors.

I went to college/university, but don’t meet the minimum admission average requirement for transfer students. Can I apply with just my high school grades?

Transfer students are required to meet minimum admission requirements. Should your academic background not reflect your true potential for success, the Academic Support Access Program (ASAP) acts as an entryway for students whose academic average falls slightly below the required admission average. This program provides you with the opportunity to pursue university studies, with access to enhanced resources to support a successful transition into your studies at Lakehead University.

Will I be considered for transfer credit for all postsecondary institutions I have attended?

Yes. We’ll review transcripts from all of your previous studies (both college and university) to assess admission and transfer credit eligibility.

What if I don’t have the required prerequisites?

If you do not meet required prerequisites, we encourage you to reach out to an advisor for support. They can provide guidance on potential options, such as completing prerequisite courses or exploring alternate pathways to admission.
