Lakehead's Society of Economic Geology (SEG) Student Chapter hosted a successful short course on "Hydrothermal Mineral Deposits – Breccias and Alteration". Taught by world renowned experts John and Anne Thompson, who literally wrote the book on alteration (GAC's Atlas of Alteration), and sponsored by the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration (CESME), the course was attended by over 30 industry geologists and Lakehead students.

The course dealt with the major types of hydrothermal deposits, the character and importance of breccias found in these deposits, the nature and importance of hydrothermal alteration, techniques and tools for quantifying hydrothermal alteration, and applications to hydrothermal deposit models and exploration.
