The Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration has just released a new video highlighting our activities. You can find the video here. Feel free to reach out if you would like to know more!
Lakehead's Society of Economic Geology (SEG) Student Chapter hosted a successful short course on "Hydrothermal Mineral Deposits – Breccias and Alteration". Taught by world renowned experts John and Anne Thompson, who literally wrote the book on alteration (GAC's Atlas of Alteration), and sponsored by the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration (CESME), the course was attended by over 30 industry geologists and Lakehead students.
The course dealt with the major types of hydrothermal deposits, the character and importance of breccias found in these deposits, the nature and importance of hydrothermal alteration, techniques and tools for quantifying hydrothermal alteration, and applications to hydrothermal deposit models and exploration.
The latest CESME Donor Impact Report highlights our work to establish the Indigenous Certificate in Geological Studies (ICGS), our research partnerships and the students supported through our scholarship programs. The report can be downloaded from our publications page.
In 2015 Jim Franklin and Phil Walford established the Dr. Melville Bartley CESME Memorial Scholarship was established in 2015, in memory of the founding principal for Lakehead Technical Institute. This scholarship will be awarded annually to graduate students that are conducting research within CESME’s Environmental pillar or Mining and Exploration pillar.
This year Jim and Phil launched an appeal to our alumni to support this fund. If you would like to contribute to this scholarship please visit https://alumni.lakeheadu.ca/donate/support select ‘other’ and type in “Dr. Melville Bartley CESME Memorial Scholarship”. By supporting graduate students, you promote higher levels of learning. Graduate students are our future leaders in the mining and exploration industry.
The Ontario Mineral Development Strategy 2015 was presented by Minister Michael Gravelle at Lakehead University on December 14, at an event hosted by CESME Director, Dr. Peter Hollings.
