Lakehead’s Role

Lakehead’s Contribution to the Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program: 
Starting in 2027, once Lakehead’s new educational facilities are complete, Lakehead University will begin co-delivering course content for the Collaborative Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program with the University of Guelph. New and upgraded facilities on Lakehead’s Thunder Bay campus will offer students a state-of-the-art environment to begin their veterinary education.

Infrastructure Development:


Lakehead is developing a suite of purpose-built and renovated facilities to support veterinary education:

  • Animal education facility for hands-on work with cattle, horses, sheep, and dogs
  • Clinical skills lab
  • Specialized anatomy and pathology lab
  • Communication lab and active learning classrooms
  • Student collaboration and support spaces

Construction Timeline:


  • Competitive RFP process launched in spring 2025
  • Indigenous-led ground blessing ceremony for the new animal education facility in June 2025
  • Construction beginning  in summer 2025
  • Facilities will open for students in fall 2027
