Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr. Kang Kang in the Biorefining Research Institute (BRI) at Lakehead University (LU), is seeking one PDF with the anticipated start date of May 01, 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. Dependent on the source of funding, the PDF will be co-supervised by Dr. Kang and Dr. Janusz Kozinski (Dean of Lakehead University’s Faculty of Engineering, LU), or Dr. Kang and Dr. Pedram Fatehi (Director of BRI and Canada Research Chair).

The proposed research will be focusing on one or more of the following areas:
1) Development of biomass-based carbon materials for energy and environmental applications
2) Hydrogen production from catalytic/photocatalytic conversion of waste resources

The research projects will be heavily hands-on laboratory research based (requires design and
construction of bench-scale reactors and apparatus, operation of analytical instruments, and
other relevant hands-on research skills), however, experiences in chemical reaction process
simulation, life-cycle assessment, application of machine learning in bioenergy, and DFT calculations of catalysis will be considered as assets. Successful candidates must be self- motivated and have strong communication and writing skills. Other than the ability to conduct the designated research projects independently, candidates with strong capabilities of students mentoring and lab-management will be giving priority.

Candidates with PhD background in chemical, environmental, and mechanical engineering or
other closely related disciplines are welcome to apply. All applicants should meet the language
admission requirements at LU. For international applicants, please see the language requirements at: https://www.lakeheadu.ca/studentcentral/applying/english-language-proficiency-requirements

To apply for this position, please email your CV, cover letter, and contact information of 3
references to Dr. Kang at kkang3@lakeheadu.ca. Due to a high volume of applications received,
we are unable to contact each applicant individually regarding the status of their application
and only the applicants short-listed for the interview will be informed.
