Six-Year Concurrent Honours Bachelor Degree Programs (Thunder Bay)
Our Six-Year Concurrent Honours Bachelor Degree Programs allow you to earn a Bachelor of Education degree (BEd) as well as an Honours Bachelor degree in a partnering discipline. This degree combination will help you to develop your teaching knowledge, skills, and attitudes as well as your subject-matter expertise to teach learners well and to address the requirements of the Ontario curriculum.
Our Six-Year Concurrent Honours Bachelor Degree Programs can prepare you to teach in the Primary/Junior (P/J) or Intermediate/Senior (I/S) division. Once you complete a Six-Year Concurrent Honours Bachelor Degree Program, you will receive an Honours Bachelor degree, a BEd, and we will recommend you to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) for certification to teach in Ontario.

Program Requirements
To complete a Six-Year Concurrent Honours Bachelor Degree Program, you must finish two components; these include your Honours Bachelor degree (four years) and your Two-Year BEd Professional Program.
Completing an Honours Bachelor Degree
As part of your program, you must first complete your Honours Bachelor degree (four years) in a partnering discipline. To receive your degree and proceed to your professional program, you must meet the degree requirements of the partnering program as well as complete certain Education courses. Note: To apply to graduate studies, many disciplines require you to have an Honours Bachelor degree in your field of study. Also, your division and teaching subjects will determine some of the courses that you must complete during your Honours Bachelor degree; make sure to check our Course Calendar for all requirements.
Completing a Two-Year Bachelor of Education Degree Program
Once you complete your Honours Bachelor degree, you will work to develop your professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes by completing a two-year BEd. To receive your BEd, you must complete a series of courses that include common core courses, curriculum and instruction courses, and electives.
During your professional program, you will select your courses, except electives, by selecting a pre-set schedule. If you are a P/J candidate, you must select your courses from one of our Professional Program On-Site Delivery (PPOD) schedules while I/S candidates must choose one of our Regular Schedules according to your two teaching subjects.
Note: You must approach all of your course work as well as your practicum in a professional and responsible manner. Throughout your professional program, you must maintain full-time attendance; failure to meet this requirement may result in a failed grade, which can result in a failed year.
Common Core Courses
Teacher candidates in a Six-Year Concurrent Honours Bachelor Degree Program, no matter your division, must complete specific common core courses. These courses will help you to establish the foundational knowledge and skills to become a successful teacher. Note: Common core courses include EDUC 4398 and EDUC 4498, which make up your in-class practicum.
Curriculum & Instruction Courses
As part of your professional program, you must complete curriculum and instruction courses that will prepare you to teach specific subjects and learners. These division-specific courses will help you to teach the required curriculum and to advance your teaching abilities in a wide-range of subjects (P/J) or in your teachable subjects (I/S).
