BENCHMARKS

Lakehead University's Priorities and Planning Group has developed a set of "Base Measures" as part of its planning and accountability structure. These measures track the University's progress in key strategic directions. Eight measures have been defined and are presented below. Historical data, and where applicable, a comparison to peer groups such as the Ontario university system, are presented for context.

Enrolment

Measured as full-time equivalent (FTE) enrolment. Measures the annual enrolment for all terms for all full- and part-time, eligible and ineligible (for funding) undergraduate and graduate students, excluding the Faculty of Medicine (Northern Ontario School of Medicine - West Campus). Note that graduate FTEs are reported every term (one graduate student enrolled full-time for one year is approximately equal to three FTEs).

Seven Year Graduation Rate

Percent of full-time, new to institution, year one students enrolling in an undergraduate (bachelors or first professional) degree program at an institution, who receive a degree from that same institution within the subsequent seven years. Includes students enrolled in the one-year Bachelor of Education program, but excludes transfer students, students enrolled in diploma programs and students enrolled in the one-year Honours Bachelor of Social Work program.

Employment Rate

Self-reported employment rate two years after graduation from an undergraduate degree program. Employment rate is estimated from the annual Ontario University Graduate Employment Survey. The indicator is calculated as the number of graduates of undergraduate degree programs employed, self-employed, or offered employment, divided by the total number of graduates of undergraduate degree programs employed, self-employed, offered employment, or looking for work and not attending school.

Professional Students

Percent of undergraduate students enrolled in professional programs. Professional programs are defined as those leading to a licensed profession/professional accreditation upon graduation and include programs in Business, Education, Engineering, Forestry, Kinesiology, Law, Medicine, Nursing, and Social Work. Only students in their professional year of a concurrent education program are counted as professional students. Indicator is calculated using the fall full-time headcount of undergraduate students. This indicator includes students enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine.

Research Grants and Contracts

The three-year moving average of total research grants and contracts as reported to the Council of Financial Officers - Universities of Ontario (COFO-UO). Includes monies from the following sources: Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Canada Research Chairs, Other Federal, Provincial, Industry, Not-for-Profit and Miscellaneous.

First Generation Students

The proportion of the Lakehead University student population who are First Generation students, estimated using the Lakehead University First Generation self-declaration survey. A First Generation student is a student for whom neither their mother nor their father has obtained a university degree.

Aboriginal Students

The estimated Aboriginal student population at Lakehead University. Students enrolled at Lakehead University have the opportunity to self-declare their Aboriginal status by completing an Aboriginal self-declaration survey presented to them at registration. Aboriginal is defined to be inclusive of First Nation, Métis, Inuit, and Non-Status peoples as in the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples 1993 definition.

International Students

The number (headcount) of undergraduate and graduate students attending Lakehead University on a student or other visa as at November count date. Indicator includes full-time and part-time students. Overall number of International students is expressed as a percentage of the overall fall headcount.
