Combined BEng and MBA

Start earning a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) while you work on your Bachelor of Engineering.

How to Join the Dual Degree Program

Students can apply directly to the dual degree program directly through OUAC, or transfer into the MBA pathway from their B.Eng program once they reach the post-diploma (year 3 level) of the B.Eng program

If you're currently studying in any B.Eng program at the 3rd year level (or higher) you can ADD or DROP the MBA from your program by emailing coord.sc@lakeheadu.ca. Please include your Student Number and your intention to either add or remove the MBA pathway.

How to Start Taking MBA Courses

Students must meet continuation requirements (see below) before they are allowed to take an Graduate Courses. Once they are in their 3rd year of study (first year post-diploma), students enrolled in any of the BEng/MBA pathways can begin the application for permission to begin taking MBA courses by filling out the following form:
https://forms.gle/AEQxPnpPULgyHc477

Continuation Requirements

1. GPA - Must be at least 70% (Faculty of Graduate Studies Regulation)
2. Progress - Should be entering their 4th year (students who are behind a course may be allowed to progress at the discretion of their chair)
3. GMAT - Please see section below

Potential Outcomes

Through academic advising, you will be recommended one of the following outcomes:

  • Start MBA Courses in Fall of year 4
  • Start MBA courses in Fall of year 4 conditionally upon GMAT
  • Use year 4 to catch up on some courses and boost your GPA, potentially start after year 4 while completing any remaining Engineering courses
  • Advised to drop into the B.Eng program

Please reach out to ckutchye@lakeheadu.ca if you have filled out the application form and want an update on your status.

GMAT

A GMAT or GRE exam is required, but not necessary at the time of application. If you obtain grades that are above average in your program, you may be eligible for a waiver. You cannot receive a waiver until you have completed at least one full fall/winter semester at Lakehead.

If no waiver is provided, a GMAT (min score 500) must be completed before you can take any MBA courses.

The Business Skills Development Program (BSDP) is an alternative to the GMAT that can be taken in the summer between years 3 and 4. Read more about the BSDP here:

Course Schedule

A schedule of courses will be provided to all BEng/MBA students that minimizes conflict between core program courses. Occasionally, conflict may be unavoidable. In this situation, students should consult with the Faculty of Business Administration to ensure that an alternative schedule is created that allows for minimal disruptions of future plans to graduate on time.

Registering for MBA Courses

Students who are given permission to start taking MBA courses must apply for special permission for each class they wish to take. These requests are approved by the Faculty of Business Administration.

Important Considerations

Straying from the approved Schedule (or an approved modification) may result in longer than anticipated time to graduation and additional costs.

It will be your responsibility to ensure that you know and meet the program regulations of both faculties.
