Environmental Philosophy - Lakehead University

A critical examination of major philosophical approaches to the environment with emphasis on Western and multicultural ethical theories, but with some attention to their practical applications to environmental issues such as pollution, global warming, resource depletion and endangered species along with political and economic considerations.

Philosophy of the Occult and Paranormal - Lakehead University

A systematic investigation of Astrology, Witchcraft, Clairvoyance, Extrasensory Perception, Psychokinesis, Out-of-body Experience and other paranormal phenomena which seem to defy scientific explanation. Students are expected to learn how to assess evidence critically while keeping an open mind.

Philosophy of Law - Lakehead University

The fundamentals of law and legal systems: the relation of law to morality and justice, the nature of law, kinds of law and the justifications for different systems of law, the function of law within the nation-state and internationally. Emphasis is on legal theory with some case studies in law.

Gender and Sexuality - Western University
An exploration of the dimensions of justice that pertain to gender and sexuality.  Through an examination of case studies in law and conceptual issues, students learn how to apply critical thinking, argumentation, and analytical skills to articulate and evaluate positions of justice along various dimensions of gender and sexuality.

Principles of Supervision (Lawrence Kinlin School of Business)
An introduction to effective industrial supervision skills.  Some topics include communications, employee motivation, supervisory leadership, administering the collective agreement, handing grievances, performance appraisal, employee training and development and effective use of supervisory time.

Employment Law (Lawrence Kinlin School of Business)
A study of today's highly regulated workplace, examining both statutory law and common law, in both federal and provincial jurisdictions. Some topics include employment standards, health and safety, labour relations, pay equity and human rights legislation as it applies to management and unionized employees and leaders.

Research Interests: 

What is the usefulness of philosophy in work and everyday life?  While Philosophers insist that the skills, orientation, and mode of life of Philosophy has inherent value and utility, most others in society tend to disagree -- that is, if they consider this question at all.  Part of the reason for the gap between what the experts say, and what the general consensus seems to be, is that Philosophers tend not to focus on, or develop skillfulness in, translating philosophical value into concrete results and clear outcomes, beyond those achieved in professional academia.  My current research interest seeks to bridge this gap, by the development of empirically-tested, philosophically-based protocols that can be used in work environments.  This includes the development of conceptual frameworks that generate measurable positive outcomes in educational systems, as well as simple, memorable reasoning methods that can be transferred without pain to non-specialists in business environments.  This is the intersection of Philosophy with Strategy in work and life environments.  In achieving measurable positive outcomes, I focus on developing specific applications and realization of critical thinking skills, insights from empirical studies in cognitive science, and a variety reasoning methodologies in real-world environments.
