Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is the integrated use of tools from mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry, and physics to the scientific understanding of biological systems. In essence, it is the application of information technology to the field of biology, and in particular, molecular biology

Interested in Bioinformatics?

Students interested in the Bioinformatics program at Lakehead University will learn....

  • An understanding of the complex interactions in living systems
  • A knowledge of the physical and chemical nature of the living environment and the impact each have on the other
  • An understanding of systems biology, taking the myriad of biological data pertaining to the various molecular interactions and building a descriptive model

What is Bioinformatics?

Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary course of study with emphasis on the integrated use of tools from mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry and physics to the scientific understanding of biological systems.

Bioinformatics entails the creation and advancement of databases, algorithms, computational and statistical techniques, and theory to solve formal and practical problems arising from the management and analysis of biological data.
