Minor in Mathematics

Overview

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is pleased to offer a minor in mathematics.  Students who like mathematics or who must take a large number of mathematics courses as part of their major can now receive a minor in mathematics that recognizes their mastery of a subset of mathematics.

To receive a minor, students must take 4FCEs (8 one semester courses) from a prescribed list of courses found below.  At least one FCE (2 one semester courses) must be at the third or fourth year level.  In addition, the average of all the mathematics courses comprising of the minor must be 60% or higher.

FAQ on Minors in Mathematics

Because we receive many questions about a minor, we have a created an FAQ that should answer all of your questions.  If you still have questions, please contact the Chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

1. Who can sign up for a Minor in Mathematics?
Any current Lakehead University student can apply for a minor in mathematics.

2.  How do I apply for a Minor in Mathematics?
You apply for a minor in Mathematics using myInfo.  From time to time, the web portal option may be shutdown.  However, you can always write to records@lakeheadu.ca and ask to apply for a minor.

3.  How many courses must I take?
You must take 4 FCEs (Full Course Equivalents) in mathematics.  This means 8 one semester courses. 

4.  Which courses must I take?
You need to take at two courses in Calculus (either Math 1171/1172 or Math 1210/1230), and six other courses from a prescribed list.  See the Lakehead University Calendar for the current list (this list changes from time to time). In addition, two of the eight courses must be at the third or fourth year.

5.   I'm an Engineering Transition Student, and I took  ENGI-3021 and ENGI-3022;  can I use these courses towards a minor?
No.  All courses in a minor in mathematics must be mathematics courses.

6.   I took some mathematics courses at another Canadian university;  can I use these courses towards a minor?
Perhaps.  If you took a course at another Canadian university, you may be able to transfer these credits to Lakehead University.  You must contact the Office of Admissions for more information.  They will ask you for a course syllabus and a description of the course from the university calendar.   

7.  I'm not sure what mathematics course to take; can you help?
Yes.  Please make an appointment with the Chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
