Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, ON

Lakehead University is Ontario’s number one research university in the undergraduate category of this year’s annual ranking of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities, as reported by Re$earch Infosource. Lakehead was second in the province in the same category, last year.

“This result confirms what we already know at Lakehead University – that research and innovation can be a thriving and growing part of universities our size,” said Provost and Vice-President-Academic, Dr. Rod Hanley. “We have exceptional faculty, students and community partners who are passionate and driven about changing the world.”

“Lakehead has performed admirably on a balanced set of research input and output/impact metrics,” said Ron Freedman, CEO of Re$earch Infosource which compiles Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities List. “The university should be proud of its researchers' success.”

“A special thanks must go to our Vice-President (Research, Economic Development and Innovation), Dr. Rui Wang, his staff, our dedicated and hardworking professors and students in Orillia and Thunder Bay, and to all of the funding agencies and peer-reviewed journals that have recognized Lakehead University’s quality research,” said Lakehead University President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Brian Stevenson.

“Research is a fundamental component of Lakehead University,” added Dr. Stevenson, “As it has a direct impact on regional economic development by supporting local industry, training an innovative workforce, and facilitating the introduction of leading-edge products and services to the market.”

When looking at all of Canada’s universities, Lakehead finished second, up from fourth, last year, in the undergraduate research category.

Calculating the undergraduate research category involves examining a number of factors, including the total amount of research dollars received by Lakehead University, research intensity (total research income per full-time faculty member), and research output based on articles published in peer-reviewed literature.
