Lakehead University offers the following teaching subjects. Please read this page carefully as each teaching subject has specific requirements. Under the chart is a list of combinations that are not offered, as well as more information on the prerequisites for each teaching subject.

Please note: Lakehead University does not offer the following combination of teaching subjects:
- Chemistry and Physics
- Environmental Science and Mathematics
- Music (Instrumental or Vocal) and Visual Arts
- Music (Instrumental) and Music (Vocal)
Teaching Subject Prerequisites:
English, History or Geography: Applicants must present core courses from the subject area. One (1) full year course, or the equivalent, in Political Science can be used towards the History teaching subject. Applicants should present a Canadian content course within the respective teaching subject background.
Environmental Science: Applicants must present a minimum number of full year course equivalents for either a first or second teaching subject from at least three (3) of the following disciplines: Anthropology (Science courses only), Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies (Science courses only), Geography (Science courses only), Geology (Earth Sciences), Meteorology, Outdoor Recreation or Physics.
First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Studies: Applicants must present a minimum number of full year course equivalents from any of the following subject areas: Indigenous Learning, Native Studies, and Canadian Studies.
French as Second Language: Applicants must present five (5) full year course equivalents, or the equivalent, in core French, in order to qualify for the French as a Second Language teaching subject. This applies to both the first and second teaching subject.
Health & Physical Education: A recognized undergraduate degree in Kinesiology or Physical Education is required for the first teaching subject. Activity courses do not count toward the number of required courses for the Health & Physical Education teaching subject. Only one (1) full year course, or the equivalent, in Anatomy and/or Physiology will count toward the Health & Physical Education teaching subject. Students applying to Health & Physical Education as a second teaching subject are not required to have one half year course, or the equivalent, at the senior level.
Mathematics: Applicants must present core Mathematics courses. Of the required number of full year course equivalents, only one (1) full year course, or the equivalent, in Statistics, will be counted towards the Mathematics first teaching subject. Statistics will not be counted towards the second teaching subject in Mathematics.
Music (Vocal and Instrumental): A recognized undergraduate degree (i.e. HBMus) in Music is required. This applies to both the first and second teaching subject. Lakehead University does not offer Music-Instrumental and Music-Vocal in combination as teaching subjects. Students are required to teach music in a "band" setting conducting students playing a variety of instruments (i.e. guitar, violin, brass ensemble, etc) and should have a variety of courses in different instruments. A background in conducting and/or ensemble courses is required.
Native Language: Applicants must present five (5) full year course equivalents, or the equivalent, in the same language, in order to qualify for the Native Langauge teaching subject. This applies to both the first and second teaching subject.
Science-Biology: Applicants must present a minimum number of full year course equivalents for either a first or second teaching subject, as well as a combination of both plant and animal (invertebrate and vertebrate) Biology. Only 1.5 full year courses, or the equivalent, from the following list, will be counted towards the Biology teaching subject: Biochemistry, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Histology, orImmunology. All other courses must be core Biology courses.
Science-Chemistry: Applicants must present core Chemistry courses. Only one (1) full credit in Biochemistry and only one (1) full credit in Pharmacy courses can be counted if relevant.
Science-General: Applicants must present a minimum number of full year course equivalents from any combination of the following subject areas: Anthropology (Science courses only), Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies (Science courses only), Geography (Science courses only), Geology (Earth Sciences), Astronomy, Meteorology, and Physics. At least three (3) of these subject areas must be represented.
Science-Physics: Applicants must present core Physics courses. Courses (if relevant) in the following areas may be considered: Fluids, Mechanics of Materials, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Dynamics, Statics, and Electrical/Electronic Technology.
Social Sciences-General (Second teachable only): Applicants must present the equivalent of 3.0 full-year courses from any combination of at least three (3) of the following: Anthropology, Religious Studies, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology, or Women's Studies.
Visual Arts: A recognized undergraduate degree in Visual Arts is required for both the first and second teaching subject. A maximum of one (1) full year course, or the equivalent, in Art History will count towards the Visual Arts teaching subject. The majority of courses presented must be studio courses.
