General Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for college transfer students vary depending on whether you are applying to a program with a college transfer pathway. For a complete list, click here.

If you are applying to a program that does not have a college transfer pathway, you must satisfy the following general admission requirements. That is, you must have: 

  • Completed a minimum of 1 year of full-time academic studies at an accredited community college since leaving high school,
  • Completed the appropriate program-specific prerequisite courses at the high school or college level, and
  • Achieved a minimum overall average of 70%.

Important: If you are applying to a program to which we have a college transfer pathway, you are not required to satisfy the Program-Specific Prerequisites as noted above. 

How to Apply

To apply to any undergraduate program offered at Lakehead University (excluding the Two-Year Bachelor of Education, Juris Doctor or One-Year Honours Bachelor of Social Work programs), the application form used will vary on the number of courses you intend to complete during your time at Lakehead University.

For full-time studies: (four or more full course equivalents)  
---> Apply through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre on the 105 Application Form 

For part-time studies: (less than three and one half courses) 
---> Apply through the Lakehead University Undergraduate Application Form

Required Documentation

Applicants are to submit the following required documentation as part of the application process.

  1. Official Transcripts
  2. Course Descriptions (excludes Engineering college transfer applicants and applicants applying through a pathway agreement)
  3. Language Proficiency Requirements (if applicable)
  4. Consent Form & Reference Letter (Nursing transfer applicants only)

Transfer Credit

If you are applying to a program that does not have a college transfer pathway, you may be eligible to receive transfer credit. Transfer credit refers to the number of course equivalents you may be awarded towards your Lakehead degree based on previous (accredited) post-secondary studies at the college level.

Procedures & Eligibility for Transfer Credit:

  1. College transfer applicants who have completed, or partially completed a college diploma, may be eligible for transfer credit. 
  2. College transfer applicants who have completed a college diploma program will be considered for transfer credit as follows:
    1. Three-Year Diploma: For a three-year diploma, with a B (70%) or better cumulative average, or a B (70%) average in the last year of the program, up to 7.5 full course equivalents may be awarded. In exceptional cases, an additional 2 full course equivalents may be awarded.
    2. Two-Year Diploma: For a two-year diploma, with a B (70%) or better cumulative average, or a B (70%) average in the last year of the program, up to 5 full course equivalents may be awarded. In exceptional cases, an additional 2 full course equivalents may be awarded.
    3. One-Year Certificate/Diploma: For a one-year certificate/diploma, with a B (70%) or better cumulative average, up to 2 full course equivalents may be awarded.
      1. One-year certificates will be evaluated on an individual basis for transfer credit. If the certificate coursework is deemed to be equivalent to high school level coursework, transfer credit will not be granted. 
  3. College transfer applicants who have partially completed a college diploma program will be considered for transfer credit as follows:
    1. Partially Completed Three-Year Diploma: For a three-year diploma where only two full years have been completed, with a B/70% cumulative average, or B/70% average in the last year of the program, a maximum of 5 full course equivalents may be awarded.
    2. Partially Completed Two-Year DiplomaFor a two-year diploma where only one full year has been completed, with a B/70% cumulative average, or B/70% average in the last year of the program, a maximum of 2 full course equivalents may be awarded.
  4. A minimum grade of B or 70% must be achieved in diploma courses in order for transfer credit to be considered.
  5. Transfer credit is granted according to appropriateness of the college program, admission requirements of degree and academic achievement in relevant courses. Specific courses for transfer credit will be determined on an individual basis. For some programs, the transfer credits may be unspecified credits that can be used towards fulfilling elective requirements.
  6. The amount of transfer credit received depends on a number of factors including grades, previous course work, the program applied to at Lakehead University. 
  7. Official transcripts, document evaluation fee and institutionally prepared course descriptions must be submitted to Enrolment Services - Undergraduate Admissions in order to process the transfer credit request. A transfer credit assessment will not be performed until these have been received. (Course descriptions are not required for articulation agreements).
  8. Enrolment Services - Undergraduate Admissions administers the awarding of transfer credits. Results of the transfer credit assessment can be found on the "For Applicants" tab of myInfo under "My Transfer Credits".
  9. Students are encouraged to regularly visit their Lakehead University myEmail and/or myInfo accounts to check the status of their transfer credit assessment request.
  10. A minimum of 3 weeks from the date of receipt of all documentation (ie: official transcripts, course descriptions) is required by Enrolment Services - Undergraduate Admissions to complete a transfer credit assessment.

In-progress transcripts or unofficial copies can be uploaded to your myInfo account using the Document Upload feature found under the Applicant tab.
