November 29, 2021 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, Ont.

Lakehead University will participate in Giving Tuesday on Tuesday, Nov. 30 – and it could be even bigger than previous years.

Seen as the “opening day of the giving season,” Giving Tuesday is when charities, companies, and individuals join together to share their commitment, rally for their favourite causes, and think about others.

This year’s goal is to raise $52,500 in support of student scholarships, bursaries and awards. As in years past, donors will be able to double their gift, as donations will be matched 1:1, up to the first $25,000 received. Since 2016, more than $326,000 has been raised through Lakehead’s Giving Tuesday efforts.

“We want to continue making great impacts in the lives of our students,” said Mark Tilbury, Alumni and Annual Giving Director at Lakehead University.  “Access to a quality education is so important and every gift we receive contributes to their future.”

Alumni and friends all over the globe are encouraged to give what they can on Giving Tuesday. You may visit the Giving Tuesday portal (donate.lakeheadu.ca) beginning at 12:01 a.m. on November 30th, until midnight.

Lakehead University receives more than $216k on Giving Tuesday for student financial aid

December 7, 2021 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, Ont.

Lakehead University officials were blown away by the more than $216,000 donated to student financial aid on Giving Tuesday, thanks to donations from alumni, friends of the university, faculty, staff, and other donors.

Lakehead’s goal was $52,500, which was the reason Dr. Moira McPherson, President and Vice-Chancellor, was impressed by the exceptional amount they raised.

“We were absolutely blown away by the generosity of our alumni, staff, faculty, and friends,” Dr. McPherson said.

She attributed this success to the University’s use of email and social media, as well as a university-wide approach to this special day of giving.

“Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would exceed our goal by 400 per cent.  The impact of this generosity on our students will be tremendous.”

Several major donors jumped at the chance to increase their existing awards, or establish new ones, due to a matching-gift incentive. In the weeks leading up to the event, alumni and friends were encouraged to participate on social media.

“Lakehead’s internal community responded very positively, as did the Alumni Board and the Board of Governors. In fact, the participation rate for both boards was at an all-time high in 2021,” Dr. McPherson added.

The majority of Lakehead’s donors were from Canada, primarily Ontario.  But Lakehead also received several international gifts, from as far away as Finland and China.

Lakehead once again held a competition between alumni from different decades, with 80s graduates outpacing all other decades.

Due to the tremendous turnout from Lakehead donors, eight new awards were created at the University, and contributions were made to dozens of endowed funds.

“Thank you to all of our donors for supporting Lakehead students,” Dr. McPherson said.

This brings the total to more than $540,000 that Lakehead has received on Giving Tuesday since the University first started participating in 2016.

Lakehead University raised $57,725 on Giving Tuesday

November 30, 2017 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, ON

Lakehead University raised $57,725 on Giving Tuesday (November 28th), thanks to the generosity of alumni, donors, faculty, staff, students, and friends of the University.

Giving Tuesday is a relatively new Canadian initiative for charitable giving.  Seen as the “opening day of the giving season,” it is when individuals, groups, and organizations, join together to share their commitment, rally for their favourite charitable causes, and think about others.

“We’re thrilled with the turnout,” said Deb Comuzzi, Lakehead University’s Vice-President, External Relations. “Last year was the first time Lakehead University participated in Giving Tuesday, and we raised nearly $42,000 – so to top that by more than $15,000 is very exciting.”

Dr. Michel Beaulieu, President and Chair of the Alumni Association of Lakehead University, said he was extremely happy with how much was raised for student financial aid.

“Thank you to everyone who donated online and in person at Lakehead Thunder Bay and Lakehead Orillia,” he said. “Your contributions will help fund scholarships and bursaries that will enhance the student experience at Lakehead University.”

A special thank you to the Alumni Association of Lakehead University, which matched the first $24,500 in gifts.

Lakehead University’s first Giving Tuesday was an exceptional success

Dr. Michel Beaulieu, Professor of History and Alumni Association President, was one of many people who participated in Giving Tuesday at Lakehead University.

December 1, 2016 – Thunder Bay and Orillia, ON

On Tuesday, November 29th, Lakehead University initiated its first-ever Giving Tuesday event, which officially kicks-off the giving season.

The University’s Social Media Champions did a tremendous job all day long sharing the message and encouraging others to support Lakehead’s students through an online or in-person gift – thank you!  A huge debt of gratitude is owed to Lakehead’s students, faculty, and staff.  The University, alumni, and civic leaders were so generous and we are most grateful.

In total, $19,684 was donated online, in-person and over the phone in support of Lakehead’s exceptional and unconventional students.  These gifts were generously matched by the Alumni Association for a combined total, to date, of $39,684.  Any gifts received by December 6th will be included in the Giving Tuesday total.

“I’m very grateful for this support of our hard-working students,” said Dr. Michel Beaulieu, Professor of History and Alumni Association President.  “Without the help of our dedicated alumni and many friends living across the country and beyond, we could not have achieved this amazing result.”

“The Alumni Association of Lakehead University has shown tremendous leadership with their matching gift on Giving Tuesday,” said Deb Comuzzi, Lakehead’s Vice-President External Relations. “On behalf of our students, who will benefit from these gifts, let me express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in our first ever Giving Tuesday initiative.”
