Families and Supporters

Families and supporters play a pivotal role in a students' decision to attend post-secondary education. In post-secondary education, accommodations become the student's responsibility, and they are required to self-advocate. This doesn't mean families and supporters cannot help students or attend meetings, it's just important to know that students are now responsible for reaching out to SAS to get their Academic Accommodations put in place.

Privacy and confidentiality are of paramount importance to Student Accessibility Services, with that in mind a student's information may only be shared with their permission. To learn more about Student Accessibility Services please see our SAS brochure, and to learn more about the many invisible disabilities read our Invisible Disabilities Information poster.

TRANSITION TO UNIVERSITY

For students with disabilities and their parents, the experience can be both exciting and frustrating. Often, questions arise such as:

How will post-secondary differ from high school?
Are services for students with disabilities available?
What supports can be accessed and how?

The Transition Planner and Transition Planning for Students with Disabilities video contain answers to all these questions and more.

There are also other ways for families and supporters to be involved in the Lakehead University community which are linked on the Student Affairs Webpage
