Dr. Scott Pound wins the 2015 Distinguished Instructor Award.

This is a peer-reviewed award that recognizes an outstanding individual who has made a significant contribution to teaching excellence and educational innovation and leadership at Lakehead University over a number of years.

The Department of English is pleased to present our first e-newsletter.

Congratulations to Dr. Rick Holmes on being named Professor Emeritus. In nearly three decades at Lakehead, Dr. Holmes made significant contributions to the Department of English and Lakehead University as a teacher, researcher, and administrator. The recipient of the Distinguished Instructor Award in 2000, Dr. Holmes is an exemplary teacher, lauded by many students for being an inspiring lecturer. The author of two books, including most recently Julian Barnes (2009), and numerous peer-reviewed articles, Dr. Holmes’s research is focused on 20^th and 21^st century British literature, and he is an internationally recognized expert on contemporary British fiction. He was the recipient of a Contribution to Research Award in 1998. Dr. Holmes also served terms as both Graduate Coordinator and Department Chair, and contributed to many other committees in the Department and across the university. The Department thanks Dr. Holmes for all his contributions, and wishes him well in his future endeavours.

Kate Beaulieu is this year's recipient of the Poulin Award for student citizenship. Kate is currently one of our MA students and was the driving force behind the creation of The Post, the recently launched undergraduate research journal.

Sarah Jacques awarded SSHRC funding for her research project on "Re-visioning popular youth fiction: A feminist parody".

Kate Beaulieu's paper, "Her Body is the Temple of the Holy Ghost: Why Margery Kempe is a Better 'Virgin'" has been accepted and she will be presenting at the 52nd International Congress on Medieval Studies at Western Michigan University this coming May.

The Department of English congratulates Latasha Schaller on the publication of her novel, Trapped,  published with Iguana Press and available on June 15th.

Trapped presents "the story of a woman on the brink of a life-altering event, struggling to manage her anxiety in a situation that is becoming increasingly impossible." Through this work, Schaller helps raise awareness of the experience of living with anxiety and depression. Her novel was successfully crowd-funded to cover publication costs and will be available at laschaller.com.
