Leap into the fascinating world of Liverworts this spring with our Liverworts of Langmans workshop! After many years of studying mushrooms and their spores under a microscope, Bob Bowles, Ontario Master Naturalist Certificate Program Coordinator, decided about ten years ago to study mosses. Mosses are in the group called bryophytes, along with liverworts and hornworts. Liverworts are unique in the plant kingdom in that they are tiny compared to plants and mushrooms; indeed, they are measured in millimeters of factions of millimeters! A liverwort measuring 1 cm tall is considered a giant among liverworts, and some are very small like Hairy Threadwort or Chain Pincerwort with shoots at only .4 mm wide.

In this workshop, Bob will guide participants through the identification of liverworts at the George Langman Sanctuary, a natural area located near Lakehead Orillia. Each participant will receive a copy of a booklet, created by Bob Bowles specially for this workshop, which includes size and other identification details for 24 species of liverworts. Bob will be conducting this workshop with Adam Storey who is an expert on mosses and liverworts. Adam has worked at the National Herbarium of Canada at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa on mosses and liverworts.
