Dr. Judith Leggatt

Judith Leggatt received her PhD from Queen's University in 1996. She was hired on a tenure-track appointment as an Assistant Professor in Lakehead's English department in 1998, was granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor in 2002, and was Chair of the English Department 2005 - 2011.
Dr. Leggatt's primary area of teaching is First Nations Literature, but she has taught a wide variety of courses at Lakehead, ranging from 1st year to the graduate level. She has taught Caribbean Literature, Canadian Literature, Speculative Fiction, and Women's Literature. She was hired, in part, to develop post-colonial studies at Lakehead, and since she has been here, she has created several new courses, including Postcolonial Literature, Caribbean Literature, First Nations Women's Writing, and Speculative Fiction. She teaches courses cross-listed with Indigenous Learning and with Women's Studies, and is committed to accommodating the different learning styles and background experiences of diverse student groups.

In addition to her work as Chair of the English department, Judith Leggatt has sat on Senate, the Board of Governors and the Aboriginal Management Council, as well as many departmental, faculty, and other university committees. She was previously on the executive of the Canadian Association for Commonwealth Language and Literature Studies, and the editorial board for Postcolonial Text. She is regularly asked to vet papers, books and proposals for national and international journals, publishers and granting agencies. She is also on the board of the Northern Ontario Women's Centre.
