English/Women's Studies Graduate Student wins Award

Holly Morgan, an MA student in English with a Specialization in Women's Studies, was awarded a prize for best graduate student paper at the 12th annual conference of the South Asian Literary Association in Seattle on January 4-5, 2012. She received the award for her paper "Slipping into the Cracks: Performances of Gender and Culture in Shani Mootoo's Valmiki's Daughter," based on her SSHRC-funded research on culture, gender, and sexuality in South Asian Diasporic Literature, under the supervision of Dr. Anna Guttman.

Dr. C. Parkes publishes book

The English Department is pleased to announce the publication of a new book by Dr. Christopher Parkes, Associate Professor and Graduate Coordinator.

Children's Literature and Capitalism: Fictions of Social Mobility in Britain, 1850-1914 (published by Palgrave Macmillan) explores the changing relationship between the child and capitalist society in the works of some of the most important authors of the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

A book launch is slated for Friday, Nov. 9 (more details on poster).
