SETTING UP START-UP COMPANIES: Tips for the Entrepreneur.

Jay Lefton practices in the areas of corporate and securities law. His clients range from start-ups to multinationals, and he also advises inventors and academic institutions in connection with the commercialization of discoveries.

He will be discussing commercial and tax considerations associated with establishing a company, getting your inventions into the company, and dealing with employees, consultants, investors and shareholders.

Jay will talk about common mistakes that startups make, and how to avoid them. Jay has been an Adjunct Faculty member of Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Business. Jay is a graduate of Port Arthur Collegiate Institute and the University of Toronto law school.

Demystifying the Process - Applying to the LU or TBRHSC REB? We Can Help

The LU and TBRHSC REBs have joined forces and developed a reciprocity arrangement for research ethics review.  This means that researchers whose research would normally have needed review from both institutions, only need to apply to one institution and their REB approval is accepted by the other.  This greatly reduces researcher and REB burden as well as shortens review timelines. 
 
If you think your research project may fall into this category, this Workshop is for you! 
 
The Research Ethics Officers from LU and the TBRHSC will present the new application processes to help aid in demystifying the process to get you on track for REB review and approval.

Working with the Media

On Tuesday, October 30th, at 10 am there will be a workshop for faculty on Working with the Media in LI 5014 C (Thunder Bay, in Teaching Commons) and OA 3007 (Orillia). This workshop will give researchers pointers on preparing to talk to the media and give an inside perspective on how the media approach interviews. Attendees will also have an opportunity to participate in a mock interview with a peer and to get feedback from the facilitators. The workshop will be facilitated by PhebeAnn Wolframe-Smith, Office of Research Services, and Brandon Walker, Media Relations. This 45 minute session will introduce participants to services offered by the Library to support researchers who need to manage datasets. The Tri-Agency Statement of Principles on Digital Data Management encourages data management planning as well as sharing and reusing datasets where possible to strengthen the research environment in Canada.

In this session, we will look at the components of a data management plan (DMP); online tools to create DMPs; considerations for sharing datasets such as metadata creation, privacy and intellectual property issues; and, preservation and storage options for datasets.

Have you received an email promising to publish your research article or conference presentation in an exciting new journal to great accolades?  So-called predatory publishers exploit researchers’ need to disseminate research results with flattery and false assurances.  In this session, we’ll examine ways to assess the credibility of a publisher and/or journal.  We’ll discuss tools to help you evaluate a prospective journal, select an appropriate journal for your research and understand your rights as a author.
