Interactive Science

Interactive Science will enhance the experiential learning of high school students that have been streamed into science and environmental studies through the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) - a ministry approved specialization program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector. Interactive Science will engage high school students in Simcoe County that are currently enrolled in SHSM in environment-related studies. In year one, students from four high schools would be invited to Lakehead University's new state-of-the-art Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) campus for one day of activities. In subsequent years, as many as six visits will occur during the high-school year.

Interactive Science will attract many students from Simcoe County secondary schools who have an interest in Environmental Science. It will increase awareness of the environmental programs offered at Lakehead Orillia. It is specifically aimed at keeping Simcoe County students in Simcoe County. Statistics show that students that graduate from a post-secondary institution tend to stay in that community. In order to attract and keep well-educated students in Simcoe County in an economy that is becoming increasingly knowledge based, Interactive Science can offer an exciting opportunity for students and staff alike.

RESOURCE NEEDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Transportation is the most significant obstacle to encouraging student participation in proactive programs like Interactive Science. To successfully undertake Interactive Science, funding is required to support both transportation and meals for students and their teachers. Approximately 45 students will be participating in year one, with this number is expected to increase over time. School bus rental for a day costs approximately $500 and food for each day is estimated at $600. In year one, $4,400 is required, and for each subsequent year, $8,000 will be required.

Your support for this project will have far-reaching results - from ensuring that Interactive Science can be offered annually, to creating a unique opportunity for high school students to learn in an exciting university environment. Let's work together to ensure that Simcoe County students have the opportunity to "Live and Learn" right here at home.
