Adventurer speaking at Lakehead University

For three years, one of Canada's most experienced backcountry travellers, James Raffan, circumnavigated the globe at the Arctic Circle, producing an acclaimed new book called Circling the Midnight Sun: Culture and change in the invisible Arctic. 

With sounds, images and stories from this grand expedition, his presentation about the journey has engaged audiences around the circumpolar world with deeply affecting stories of societies and landscapes in the throes of enormous change. 

Called “compelling and utterly original,” this is both an adventure story and a talk that will affect and change your view of the North forever.  

The Literary Review of Canada said Raffan’s book is an “account that reveals the spirit of an adventurer, the intellect of a geographer, the curiosity of a journalist and the heart of a humanist. He brings these elements together in a way that is not only highly readable, but tailored for the suite of contradictory patterns, ethical conundrums and rapid change that is the modern Arctic.” 

This free presentation is supported by the Outdoor Recreation Students’ Society, The School of Outdoor Recreation, Parks and Tourism, and the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities – Lakehead University.
