What Are Transferable Skills? Transferable skills are skills that can be transferred from one instance to another, whether that be work, school or social life. These skills can be developed and strengthened to attract new employers or different opportunities. These portable skills are acquired through school, internships, hobbies, employment, and volunteer experiences. Transferable skills are valuable in and out of the workplace, including your daily social interactions. Understanding these skills is important to understanding your employability. Transferable skills are a way for you to let the employer know that you have skills that fit their workplace. It also shows employers that even if you do not have relevant experience you can still be an asset to the company. Where can I find part-time employment?On campus part time employment can be found through the Work Study Program or non work study positions. Non work study positions may include jobs at the library, bookstore, Aramark, The Outpost, etc. These jobs are advertised on the Lakehead University Job Bank or by going in person to speak to the managers of these departments. Off campus part time employment is often found by visiting businesses in person, such as restaurants, grocery stores, convenience stores, etc. Bringing a copy of your resume and speaking to the manager in person are recommended. Part time off campus employment can also be searched for on job banks such as Indeed.com or MySuccess. Can I get my resume reviewed?Yes, the Career Zone offers an abundance of resume services, including resume review appointments. For more information about these services, please visit the “Our Services” section of our website. Can you advise me on academic matters, such as program or course selection?The Career Zone is here to help with all career development inquiries! We want to ensure your success as you navigate your academic and employment pathway. If you are looking to speak to someone regarding specific course/program options, please make an appointment with Student Central. What is Co-operative Education and how do I apply for co-op?Co-operative Education is an optional work-integrated learning experience that is offered by 24 programs at Lakehead University.
