UNIVERSITY

The Board of Governors of the University recognizes individuals who have contributed to the growth, development,

welfare, and well-being of Northwestern Ontario, Simcoe County and of Lakehead University. This is done by the
conferring of the title Fellow of the University. You will recognize University Fellows by their familiar blue gown with

white velvet epitoge or scarf.

This year, Lakehead University honours:

JACQUELINE DOJACK

Fellow of the University

Jacqueline Dojack is always ready to apply her formidable energy to helping individuals and organizations
lourish. Jacqueline supported Lakehead University on its path to becoming an innovative nationally-recognized

institution. From 1996 to 2008, she served on Lakehead’s Board of Governors and coordinated major
fundraising campaigns. As Board of Governors Chair, Jacqueline was involved in two historic milestones: the
opening of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) and the opening of Lakehead’s Orillia campus.

Jacqueline began her career with the Lakehead Board of Education in 1968, progressing from teacher to
superintendent of education. In 1990, she joined the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training’s northwestern
branch where she held senior positions until retiring in 1998. That same year, Jacqueline founded Dojack

Associates Ltd. to provide program reviews, strategic planning services, and dispute resolution.

Jacqueline Dojack has volunteered extensively with community groups including the Thunder Bay Symphony
Orchestra, the Port Arthur Rotary Club, and Nu-Vision Ministry. She was on NOSM’s Board of Directors from

2007 to 2013. Currently, she’s president of the Lutheran Community Care Centre’s Board of Directors and a
member of the United Way Thunder Bay Board of Directors and the City of Thunder Bay Police Services Board.

LIZ MCWEENY

Fellow of the University

For 35 years Elizabeth (Liz) McWeeny has been a passionate advocate for refugee rights and protection.
Her efforts began at the grass roots level in 1979 when she volunteered with Citizenship and Immigration
Canada and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Thunder Bay to launch the Private Sponsorship of Refugees

Program which resettled hundreds of refugees in Northwestern Ontario. Liz was chairperson of the Thunder
Bay Friends of Refugees and she is a founding member of the D.O.O.R.S. to New Life Refugee Centre.

She’s been a member of the Canadian Council for Refugees since 1998, including two terms as
president, and was named a Member of the Order of Canada in 2012 for her refugee work. More recently,
Liz has focused on poverty reduction. In 2008, she and her husband, Richard Buset (BA’73), founded

Compassionet Impact Development Canada to sponsor home-building, micro-business loans, and education
programs for the poor in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where she and Richard reside for part of the year.

Along with her husband, Liz McWeeny has supported Lakehead University initiatives such as the ATAC
building campaign, the establishment of the William H. Buset Centre for Music and Visual Arts, and the

creation of student bursaries.
