Mitacs update on COVID-19 — Accelerate and Elevate

As the landscape around COVID-19 continues to change, our priority of supporting global public health remains steadfast. Mitacs’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of students and partners is paramount. In response to these unprecedented times, Mitacs is making short-term modifications to our operations.

We have provided all our Accelerate and Elevate program participants (master’s students to postdocs) with the following information and asked them to let us know which option best meets their needs during the pandemic period.

  1. Off-site: Mitacs is allowing work to take place virtually during this unprecedented time. In this case, we expect interns/fellows to follow partner and university work-from-home procedures. We expect all participants to communicate regularly, agree on expectations, and carry out the research as outlined in their applications.

  1. Request for changes: We are also supporting changes to projects on a case-by-case basis. If the project is not able to continue in light of COVID-19 restrictions (e.g., indispensable infrastructure isn’t available), the project can be put on hold at any time. Mitacs expects the academic researchers and the partner organizations to discuss the best course of action.
  1. Proceed as proposed: If the project can be carried on as initially planned, please proceed as per the original project outline.

All Accelerate and Elevate program participants — both current and those scheduled to start through August 31, 2020 — have been informed of the above.

Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT): In order to align with physical distancing protocol and help protect the wellbeing of our participants, Mitacs will be instituting EFT with all academic partners so that students may be remunerated promptly.

Thank you for your continued vigilance in combating this virus
