Biorefining Research Institute
12 month contract
Job Description: The Biorefining Research Institute (http://lubri.lakeheadu.ca) at Lakehead University is seeking an exceptional, highly-motivated researcher to develop research projects in the area of Forest Biomass Biorefining. The Biorefining Research Intern will undertake a research study on valorization of low-value industry streams generated by the Northern Ontario pulp and paper mills, with a prime objective of "turning waste into value" for the sustainable production of biofuels and value-added products. The utilization of low-cost or negative-cost waste has at least two major advantages over any other lignocellulosic feedstock: lower the overall production costs of targeted bioproducts; and reduce the waste treatment costs, carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. The following waste streams will be characterized and evaluated as raw materials for value-added products: 1) pulp and paper mill sludge; 2) crude tall oil. Targeted products from mill sludge will include fermentable sugars, biochemicals such as lactic and succinic acids, and biofuels such as ethanol. Valorization of crude tall oil will focus on production of biodiesel and/or green diesel, fuel additives, and essential omega-3/6 fatty acids.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be a recent graduate with a completed PhD degree (within the last three years) in Chemical/Biological Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemistry, or a closely-related discipline. Candidates with research experience and knowledge of relevance to the above-described projects will be preferred. Candidates should have a productive research history, high creativity, self-motivation, strong problem solving abilities, and good written and communication skills in English.
Performance Measurement: The Biorefining Research Intern’s progress will be measured through: 1) regular meetings and presentations of research progress; 2) regular communication with project partners and community contributors; 3) regular progress reports and a final written report as required in the 11th month of the project. Peer-reviewed publications and IP creation (invention disclosures and patents) will be encouraged as the ultimate outcome and measure of the candidate's success.
Eligibility Requirements: Candidates must be recent graduates of post-secondary degree or diploma programs who have graduated within the last three (3) years from an accredited college or university. The position must provide the intern with first-time employment in their field of study. Candidates are only eligible to participate in the internship program one time.
