Northern Studies

Lakehead University is known as one of the leading institutions for Northern Studies in Canada. Our unique, interdisciplinary program will have you explore  Northern peoples, issues and environments of Canada's provinces and territories, and other circumpolar regions.

Topics you will study incorporate a range of disciplines, including:

  • Anthropology
  • Biology
  • Economics
  • Environmental Studies
  • Indigenous Learning
  • Political Science
  • Sociology

In addition to in-class learning, you will have the opportunity to participate in the North2North student mobility program, allowing you to spend a 4-8 month term studying abroad at a University of the Arctic partner institution in a country such as Finland or Norway.

Lakehead Advantage

Our location in Northwestern Ontario, proximal to many Northern communities and populations, makes Lakehead University one of the best institutions to pursue Northern Studies. We maintain strong ties to organizations, businesses and individuals dedicated to improving issues particular to the North. This creates opportunities for unique course content, involvement in research projects, and access to professional positions in the field.

Our Department is small, diverse and conducive to interaction with both your peers and professors. We encourage you to take advantage of the friendly, personal learning environment and reach out to Faculty for course help as well as potential job and/or mentorship opportunities.

Program Specific Requirements

Please Select Your Applicant Type

As a first year Northern Studies major you will be required to complete the following courses:

  • Northern Studies 1111 – Introduction to the Circumpolar World
  • Northern Studies 1112 – Introduction to the Canadian North

These courses outline specific physical, social, and historical characteristics of Arctic, Subarctic, and Canadian regions. The balance of your courses will be electives from the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

We encourage you to participate in the North2North student mobility program which allows you to spend a 4-8-month term studying abroad at a University of the Arctic partner institution in countries including:

  • Greenland
  • Finland
  • Iceland
  • Norway
  • Russia
  • Sweden
  • Denmark

This is a great way to experience circumpolar regions, and learn about a different Northern culture and their unique challenges. Opportunities also exist throughout Canada and the United States.

We have many student-run societies and clubs that cater to virtually any interest! These organizations are integral to our sense of community on campus. They host events, fundraisers, workshops, and competitions to bring people together and raise awareness for unique topics and issues. Visit our Student Clubs and Associations page for more information, as well as a listing of Student Centres.
