Research Facilities

Lakehead University is located within Canada's boreal forest region. The boreal forest includes eight eco-zones, each with its own flora and fauna characteristics. It also covers nearly 60% of the land area of Canada (approximately three million square kilometres). Because significant portions of it remain intact, the boreal forest acts as a magnet for environmentalists and scientists who value the opportunity to conduct large-scale research and conservation projects, unlike in many other regions of the world.

Natural Resources Management students have access to state-of-the-art scientific equipment and laboratories. Eleven specialized testing rooms include the Nutrient Ecology Laboratory, Forest Soils Laboratory, Forest Genetics Laboratory, and the Centre for Application of Resources Information System (LU-CARIS).

Two designated forests where research work can be carried out are the The Jack Haggerty Forest and The Legacy Forest. In the Jack Haggerty Forest, students study in the outdoor laboratory and the practises of effective forest management. The Legacy Forest is an experimental research forest where the impacts of intensive forest management on forest sustainability are studied.
