Lakehead University Law Professor Dr. Ryan Alford is releasing a book called Permanent State of Emergency, where he discusses the ongoing failure to address human rights abuses in the United States.

Dr. Alford is an Assistant Professor in the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law. In this book he argues that this failure is a symptom of the most serious constitutional crisis in American history.

2nd Annual Aboriginal Programs Open House on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the John. N. Paterson Auditorium at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law.

 Ms. Elysia Petrone-Reitberger will be the Keynote Speaker. Ms. Petrone-Reitberger will share her story as a recent graduate from the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law. 

 

Elysia Petrone Reitberger is from Thunder Bay, Ontario. She graduated from Lakehead University’s Bora Laskin Faculty of Law in 2016 making her a member of the faculty’s first alumni. She is of mixed Italian, German and Ojibway (Fort William First Nation) ancestry. She is from the Eagle Clan. She works as a lawyer at Falconers LLP. She did her Master’s thesis on Aboriginal Consultation for the Ontario Mining Act modernization process. Before that, she received her Honours Bachelor of Arts from the University of Ottawa in Environmental Studies and Geography. Elysia enjoys being a part of the Aboriginal Community Council Program, a diversion program out of the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre. While at law school Elysia was a member of the Indigenous Student Law Association and the Environmental Law Students’ Association. She enjoys making maple syrup, biking and playing basketball.

Senator Kim Pate

The Honourable Kim Pate will be in Thunder Bay on Friday, March 31 to give a talk from 12:00 to 1:30 pm at the Bora Laskin Faculty of Law's John N. Paterson Auditorium.

 

She was appointed to the Senate of Canada on November 10, 2016. 

 

Senate Pate is a nationally renowned advocate who has spent the last 35 years working in and around the legal and penal systems of Canada, with and on behalf of some of the most marginalized, victimized, criminalized and institutionalized—particularly imprisoned youth, men and women.

 

She has been instrumental in building coalitions across the country with other equality-seeking women’s, anti-racism, anti-poverty and human rights groups and organizations; and, in this capacity, has worked with feminist legal scholars, lawyers, other professionals and front-line advocates and activists—from indigenous communities to transition house and rape crisis centre workers.

 

Everyone is invited to attend this talk.

Chief Justice George R. Strathy, Chief Justice of Ontario Presentation

The Honourable George R. Strathy was appointed Chief Justice of Ontario on June 13, 2014.
Chief Justice Strathy received a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University in 1970 and was
awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to pursue graduate studies. He received a Masters of Arts degree in International Relations at the University of Toronto in 1971. He attended the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto and was awarded the Gold Medal in 1974.


In practice, he specialized in civil litigation, with particular emphasis in Maritime and Transportation Law. He was a partner in the firms of MacKinnon, McTaggart, Campbell, Godfrey and Lewtas, and Fasken Martineau Walker before establishing
his own firm in 1991. The firm ultimately became Strathy & Isaacs.


He was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario on April 25, 2013. For the previous five
years he served as a judge of the Superior Court of Justice in the Toronto Region, where he
presided over civil, class action and criminal matters.
