Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights were endorsed by the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2011, and are promoted to Canadian mining companies operating internationally as part of Canada’s 2014 CRS Strategy.  Entitled “Doing Business the Canadian Way”, the CSR Strategy promotes several international CSR standards that embed the business responsibility to respect rights with specific attention to the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities.  Notably, a gender perspective was introduced for the first time in the 2015 OECD Stakeholder Engagement Guidance for extractive industries.

This presentation will examine why respect for the rights of women and girls, as well as men and boys, is crucial for responsible and sustainable mining, both within and outside of Canada.
