Non-Academic Prerequisites

You, whether at Lakehead Thunder Bay and Lakehead Orillia, must meet the following requirements before you can participate in any Bachelor of Education degree (BEd) program.

Police Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening (PRC/VSs)

Prior to any contact with students, you must complete a police records check (PRC) which must include a vulnerable sector screening (VSS).

You can obtain your PRC/VSS from your local police authorities. It is your responsibility to ensure you meet all of the school board requirements before any field experience or your practicum and/or Professional Program On-site Delivery (PPOD) classes; this may involve contacting your preferred board to assure that you are eligible to work in their classrooms. Your PRC/VSS is necessary for the following purposes:

  • To be eligible for any field experiences, including your practicum, you must submit your original PRC/VSS document (not a photocopy) to the principal of your placement school
  • To be eligible for your courses, you must submit a photocopy of your PRC/VSS to your faculty advisor on the first day of EDUC 4350 (Professional Program) or EDUC 4490 (Professional Year)

If your PRC/VSS includes any incidents, you may not be eligible to complete your practicum and/or participate in our PPOD stream. To ensure that the incident(s) do not compromise your Professional Program/Professional Year, we recommend that you contact the Human Resource Department where you hope to complete your practicum and/or PPOD classes.

For more information about obtaining a PRC, please see the following:

Note: Your PRC/VSS is only valid for sixth months and you must present an original document before every placement. We recommend that you apply for your PRC/VSS well before your classes and field experiences so you have the necessary documentation

Freedom of Active Tuberculosis Documentation

Most Partnership Boards no longer require the Tuberculosis (TB) skin test.  Please check the chart of Board Specific Instructions  (under Our Partnership School Boardsto determine your Boards' requirements.

If your Board requires a TB skin test, you must obtain a TB skin test (one-step) to verify that you are able to work in their schools. Your documentation needs to include a letter with the clinic’s name and contact information as well as the signature of the practitioner who administered your test. Your TB skin test is necessary for the following purposes:

  • To be eligible for any field experience, including your practicum, you must submit the original  TB skin test documentation to the principal of your placement school
  • If you are in Year 1 of the two-year Professional Program, and in the Primary/Junior division at the Thunder Bay Campus, to be eligible for your courses, you must submit a photocopy of your TB skin test documentation, in a sealed envelope, to your faculty advisor on the first day of EDUC 4350 (Professional Program).

Note: Your TB skin test is only valid for one year and you must present original documents at the beginning of all of your placements.

Failure to produce your PRC/VSS and/or TB Skin test

If you are unable to produce a copy of a recent  PRC/VSS or TB skin test, before courses begin, we may revoke your offer of admission and you will not be able to participate in our program.

If you are unable to produce an original document of a recent PRC/VSS or TB skin test as part of EDUC 4398/EDUC 4498 (Professional Program) or EDUC 4499 (Professional Year), your student placement, you will not be able to participate and complete your practicum.
