Diploma Program

Program Overview

The program is part in-person, and part virtual. Students come to one of our campuses (Thunder Bay or Orillia) for 4-weeks, for each of two successive summers. The rest of the program is completed virtually.

Students will have two placements (80 days), one in the first fall/winter, and one in the second fall (and then finish the program in December, so the program is approximately 16-18 successive months.)

Technological Education Program

This program provides the preparation required for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers for teaching Technological Studies in Ontario High Schools. Candidates who enter the program with acceptable 5 years wage-earning experience will receive, upon successful completion of the program, a Diploma in Education - Technological Studies.

Candidates who enter the program with an acceptable University degree or College diploma will receive, upon successful completion of the program, a Bachelor of Education in Technological Studies. Graduates of the Diploma in Education who later obtain an acceptable degree can apply to have the Diploma converted to a B.Ed.

In addition, successful completion of Summer 1 and a practicum of a minimum of ten days will qualify candidates on a Letter of Permission to apply to the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) for a Transitional Certificate of Qualification which will allow them to work while continuing the program.

Requirements for entry into the Technological Education Program

Teacher Candidates must have an acceptable level of skill, knowledge and work experience in the technological area you will teach. You need a total of five years accumulated in one of two ways:

  1. Five years of work experience (1,700 hours represents one year) in business or industry where you used knowledge and skill in the area of technology you chose in your program of teacher education.
  2. A combination of post-secondary education and work experience in business or industry where you used knowledge and skill in the area of technology you chose in your program of teacher education. This must include at least two years of work, of which at least four months must be continuous employment. Your post-secondary education or apprenticeship program must be acceptable to the College.

Additional Requirements

All students must obtain a Police Records Check (PRC) with Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS), before scheduled student teaching placements.

Students will be required to meet all health requirements of the school board or boards they are placed in (including vaccinations).

Important Dates

  • June 29, 2023: Final date to apply (this course is capped and applications will close once we reach our program capacity)
  • July 4, 2023: First day of classes (Thunder Bay & Orillia campus)

Application Instructions:

Select the "Browse Programs" tab from the left hand menu. The program is listed under Special Student Programs > Diploma in Technological Education (Thunder Bay & Orillia). The program code is AZJ. After selecting the program, you will be able to indicate your campus choice by using the "subject of major interest" drop down menu and clicking "save program".
