International Education Week 2021

A Message from James Aldridge (Vice Provost, International)

Welcome to International Education Week!

Headshot of James AldridgeLakehead University International (LUI) is excited and proud to again host International Education Week (IEW) at Lakehead University. An annual event celebrated around the world during the third week of November, this year's IEW provides an opportunity to showcase the cultural diversity of our wonderful international student population, inform the Lakehead community about our efforts to internationalize Lakehead’s campuses and communities, and highlight the importance of international education.

Interactive in-person and online sessions hosted by staff, faculty, and students are designed to enlighten participants, celebrate cultural diversity, and introduce opportunities for internationalization through study and work abroad. I want to encourage all members of the Lakehead university community to get involved with IEW 2021 and celebrate our amazing international students and campuses.

In keeping with our vision to develop inter-culturally competent and socially engaged leaders through transformative global experiences, LUI is working hard to honour the many cultures that make our communities so vibrant, and to engage in both safe, in-person and online opportunities for knowledge sharing and skill-building. From cooking classes to cultural celebrations, panel discussions to exploring study abroad opportunities, and country explorations to featuring fashion from around the world, IEW offers something for everyone.

Below please find the schedule of events and how you can register, as well as a list of international resources and relevant contact information. Register now and Zoom will send you a reminder! We look forward to spending time with you!

Lakehead Makes Leaders

Lakehead Makes Leaders (LML) is a co-curricular completion certificate open to all Lakehead students. LML focuses on empowering students with soft skills and professional development opportunities essential to effectively access the labour market after graduation. The LML program is made up of 5 distinct modules, each designed to focus on developing a different leadership or soft skill that is valued in the Canadian labour market. Four (4) of the Five (5) modules can be completed in no specific order over the course of a student’s time at Lakehead University. Module Five (5) is a capstone module that involves a career service placement opportunity and requires successful completion of all 4 modules first so that a student is set up for career placement success. Successful completion of each module generates a specific Leadership completion certificate designed for the key competencies met. Completion of all five (5) modules leads to a Lakehead Makes Leaders completion certificate. All five (5) modules, upon successful completion, are updated on the student’s permanent co-curricular record so employers in Ontario can be assured that you have the soft skills and leadership competencies that they are looking for when hiring new graduates.  This cutting edge career readiness program is organized and hosted online through Lakehead International Student Services.  Click HERE to register for the Lakehead Makes Leaders program.  Visit our website to learn more about the Lakehead Makes Leaders program.

Peer Mentor Program

Lakehead International’s Peer Mentor program pairs up experienced Lakehead students with a small group of new international students to help ease their transition to Lakehead by orienting them to the resources and services offered by Lakehead University for its students.
