Celeste Smith (she/her) is the Executive Director of Skywomans Garden and the Project Lead of Ga Gitigemi Gamik. Celeste is from the Wolf Clan, and is Oneida/Mohawk from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. As an intergenerational trauma survivor, she has made it her life's mission to help women rebuild their connections to the land and their life-ways. Celeste is a seed steward, traditional agriculturalist and former professor of Traditional Ecological Knowledge at Niagara College. Her Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) comes from a strong connection to her family's agricultural traditions and 30 years of personal/community gardening experience. She continues to educate herself through ceremony and engagement with traditional healers and agricultural experts. Her current work centres around Indigenous education, food sovereignty, land access and Indigenous Human Rights. Celeste's academic experience was at Niagara College (Social Sciences), Brock University (Sociology/Indigenous Education) and Columbia University NYC (Indigenous Rights and Policy). Celeste has taught students in various capacities, from elementary school to adult learners and worked in the dept. of Indigenous Education at Niagara College for five years. She is an Indigenous Education Consultant at The District School Board of Niagara and the Niagara Catholic Catholic School Board, where she holds regular workshops for both students and teachers/administration. As a speaker, she has travelled extensively, lecturing at hundreds of events and conferences including organizing an annual event at Brock University centred around Indigenous Human Rights and Food Sovereignty Issues. Celeste has most recently taught Traditional Ecological Knowledge at Niagara College as well as teaching Indigenous Wellness in the Indigenous Bridge to College Program offered in conjunction with the Niagara Peninsula Area Aboriginal Management Board (NPAAMB). Celeste has also held board positions and paid positions at various Indigenous organizations including as a recruiter for Indspire Educational Foundation and as the Director of the Three Fires Community Justice Program.
