Lakehead University International (ext 7848)

Lakehead University International (LUI) is the global hub for Lakehead University, welcoming learners from around the world, nurturing student mobility and global engagement, and fostering a culture of internationalization on both campuses. LUI is a valuable resource and support centre for students, faculty, and staff involved in international and internationalization activities. Dedicated advisors ensure that our international students, short-term exchange students, and ESL students have the resources and support needed to realize their personal and academic potential, and are able to capitalize on all that Lakehead University has to offer!

LUI offers a wide array of in-person and virtual/online support, including arrival support and a comprehensive orientation program designed specifically to meet the unique needs of international students as they transition to life in Canada and our campus communities. Supports include Peer Mentor, JUMP and Lakehead Maes Leaders programs, as well as student advising on a broad range of issues including visas, study and work permits, health care, and many more. In addition, we host a range of fun, cultural, and social activities (both in-person and online) that help students build community and maximize the international student experience. Our International Student Lounge provides a welcoming space for students to meet and exchange ideas on the Thunder Bay campus. In Orillia, international student supports are provided by our International Engagement Specialist.

LUI strives to develop interculturally competent and socially-engaged leaders through transformative global experiences. We coordinate the Study Abroad and Student Exchange Programs for all students, which provides students the opportunity to gain international experience at our partner institutions around the world. In addition, LUI provides coordination and expertise in facilitating international academic activities through the development of partnerships and by providing international learning opportunities to the campus community.

ELC: Located in 8 dedicated classrooms within the International Centre on the Thunder Bay campus, the English Language Centre (ELC) delivers the Academic English Program (AEP) for students preparing to attend Lakehead’s undergraduate and graduate programs. ELC also coordinates a variety of customized summer language and academic programs, Train the Trainer programs, and short-term programs for visiting students.
