Memberships & Facilities

As faculty and staff of Lakehead, you are eligible for a discount on memberships for our health & wellness facilities. The Lakehead Athletics Centre, includes The Wolf Den, a brand new state-of-the-art athletics facility which will feature a multi-use gymnasium, cardio and weight equipment, lounge areas, and will allow for enhanced space and programming for health, wellness, and recreation; the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse, containing a 15,000 square foot Thunderdome gymnasium, fitness centre, 50-metre eight-lane swimming pool, Kinesiology labs, hot yoga studio, High Performance Hockey Centre and change rooms complete with saunas and the 50,000 square foot Hangar, an athletic facility home to a 200-metre track, pro-grade artificial turf field, weight training, aerobic and cardio areas, as well as the University’s Sports Medicine Clinic.

Varsity Teams

It is at the “Thunderdome” where you can find many of our varsity teams in action and is known to be the most electric crowds in Ontario University Athletics.  Lakehead is home to eight varsity teams including Men’s & Women’s Basketball, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s Hockey, Wrestling, Track and Field, Cross Country, and Nordic Ski teams. Working hard to promote a healthy and active campus lifestyle, Campus Recreation provides a great selection of intramural sport leagues, along with fitness programming, including group fitness classes and personal training. All Campus Recreation programming is open to all members of the Lakehead University Community and is inclusive to all skill levels and abilities.

Lakehead Athletics is proud to offer a variety of children’s programming suitable for the potential youth in your family.  Our PA Day, March Break and Summer Camps will provide a safe, active and engaging opportunity for children to explore sports and activities on the campus.

Also housed in Athletics is our Achievement Program, which supports access to post-secondary education by providing an opportunity to potential future students who experience socioeconomic barriers to obtaining post-secondary education. Students enrolled in our program in grade four, and each year by meeting the program requirements can earn financial support to attend Lakehead. The program provides learning opportunities to youth and there are many opportunities for faculties and departments to feature undergraduate pathways through hands-on activities. Other Recreation Opportunities

Also in Thunder Bay, outdoor hockey, skating areas, alpine ski hills and cross country ski trails are available during the winter months. Walking trails are located along the McIntyre River, which flows through the campus. More information about outdoor recreational opportunities can be found at
