Research Assistant

Human Sciences, Northern Ontario School of Medicine, Lakehead University

Full-time Contract – 1 Year Term

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Assistant will support a project funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada. The skills associated with this position would typically be obtained through the completion of a graduate degree in a field of health, social, or behavioural science. Key responsibilities will include performing a series of environmental scans of tobacco cessation services across Canada for subgroups of the populations with disproportionately higher rates of tobacco use; assist with administering and analyzing surveys and key informant interviews, report writing, and knowledge dissemination (fact sheets, infographics, conference presentations, and manuscripts); and perform other research-related duties such as REB applications. Opportunities will be available to co-publish, give conference presentations, and contribute to knowledge translation.

 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in health, social, or behavioural sciences.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the ethics that govern the participation of human subjects in research (TCPS2 CORE-2022 Certificate of Completion required).
  • Practical understanding of and experience with literature searches, environmental scans, and data collection.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data entry and descriptive analyses using SPSS statistical software; experience with content and/or qualitative analyses an asset.
  • Demonstrated research experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
    • Priority populations identified for this project (persons identifying as LGBTQ2S+, Indigenous persons, young adults especially those living in rural and remote communities, and people with substance use disorders and/or mental health conditions)
    • Smoking reduction/cessation
    • Patient-oriented health research and/or health service access and use
    • Digital or virtual health care research
    • Evaluation research
  • Skills proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and SPSS data analytic software. Experience with FileMakerPro and/or Qualtrics an asset.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills for internal and external communication including:
    • Written and spoken English
    • Experience summarizing research findings into reports
    • Understanding of knowledge transfer and translation with the ability to write for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Good organizational skills including time-management, ability to maintain accurate records, manage research data with attention to detail, and ability to independently identify issues and plan improvements.
  • Demonstrated positive work record and good attendance record.

This position primarily Monday to Friday, 8:30 – 4:30 with flexibility regarding the hours of work and the location, and access to a contract benefit package.
