Reporting to the Director, International Student Services, the Registered International Student Advisor (RISIA) works in collaboration with members of the Lakehead International team and other administrative and academic units at Lakehead University, providing immigration advising to international students and the broader Lakehead community.

 

The RISIA contributes to Lakehead University’s internationalization efforts and global engagement priorities by supporting the pre-arrival, arrival/onboarding, ongoing student advising and immigration advising for the over 1,500 international students attending Lakehead University. The Advisor ensures the delivery of excellent student support and customer service before, during and after arrival at Lakehead. This position requires a collaborative and culturally informed approach to resolving and range of student immigration questions and issues.

 

The Registered International Student Immigration Advisor is responsible for meeting with students to provide advising that enables them to make plans consistent with their abilities, interests, and resources. The advisor works as part of a team that will monitor and coach students’ progress towards meeting their educational, personal, and professional goals and proactively contact students at critical points in their academic development with intentional outreach to provide connection, belonging, inclusivity, and to build positive relationships with students to ensure they are accessing all the supports that Lakehead University offers to support their success.

 

Registered International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) training through Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) is essential. Candidates require a Bachelor degree or equivalent, coupled with two (2) years previous experience in academic advising. Two (2) years previous experience in providing RISIA scoped immigration advising is preferred. Post-secondary education courses in cross-cultural or intercultural communication and Cultural Intelligence (CQ) training required to remain in the role are preferred. Knowledge of a language other than English and experience living in another country or culture are considered assets. Strong intercultural communication skills demonstrated ability to function effectively in inter-cultural environments and fluency in at least one language other than English are considered assets. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal communication, and presentation skills, including written, oral, and in individual and group settings, as well as a demonstrated skills in diplomacy and the ability to interact and liaise with stakeholders from all levels within Lakehead University.
