Lakehead University, Thunder Bay Campus, invites applications for a Contract Lecturer to teach: 

UNIV 1016 First-Year Seminars  

Investigation of a topic, using a multidisciplinary approach in a group setting as an introduction to scholarship at the university level. The focus of each First Year Seminar course will vary, but this year, the topic will be “Pandemic.” The instructor will need to employ a rich range of teaching methods to meet the needs of diverse, first year learners. The purpose of this course is to familiarize students to both academic expectations in their coursework and resources and services at Lakehead that would help them succeed in university life. The course will introduce students to approaches for developing critical thinking skills, creating a professional academic identity, and dispensing their academic responsibilities, especially in online settings. 

Start Date/Duration

The successful candidate will instruct a 4-week class, 0.5 FCE course, from July 20 - August 14, working with a team to develop content across potentially multiple sections of a course. 

Qualifications Preferred:

The successful applicant will have many, if not all, of the following knowledges, skills, and attributes: 

  • hold an advanced degree, PhD preferred.
  • experience in designing, managing, and assessing online learning opportunities.
  • an understanding of teaching research, reading, and writing as interwoven, recursive practices.
  • experience designing instruction at the first-year level, in online and hybrid classrooms, particularly around designing first year experiences and creating community in online environments.
  • some background or understanding of interdisciplinary approaches to the course’s topic, “pandemic.”
  • demonstrated commitment to diversity, and understanding of antiracist/anti-oppressive pedagogy and student evaluation.
  • Experience with experiential learning and online or alternative modes of course delivery.
