Reporting to Lakehead's General Counsel and University Secretary (GC-US), the Law Clerk will provide legal advice under the supervision of the General Counsel, provide law clerk services through all stages of legal matters, and executive assistant services to the GC-US including triaging legal matters..
Specific duties include:
providing legal services by drafting, revising, reviewing, scanning, and maintaining files related to the University's legal matters, including contracts under supervision of General Counsel;
providing legal services by carrying out legal searches, legal research and analysis of legal requirements under the supervision of the General Counsel;
developing and maintaining best practices for contract management and compliance;
maintaining contact with people involved in legal matters and communicating progress;
processing and handling highly confidential information relating to the legal matters of the University;
keeping the University's legal matters organized by establishing and organizing files, monitoring calendars, meeting deadlines, documenting actions, and inputting information into file database and case management software;
working with managers in other University departments, to draft and review standard Lakehead contracts for approval by the GC-US;
organizing evidence and taking notes during proceedings and hearings;
Providing administrative support to the GC-US, including filing, and opening and closing files; and
managing the GC-US's calendar and schedules including monitoring meeting dates, assist in setting up and organizing meetings and appointments, arranging hotel, travel and expenses with respect to travel and processing expenses for reimbursement.
The successful candidate has a Legal Assistant college diploma or university degree in a related field coupled with a minimum of five years of law clerk, legal assistant or legal secretary experience in an in-house or law firm environment. Knowledge of corporate regulatory requirements relating to general corporate legal administration is required, as is knowledge of different courts’ procedural rules, best practices in terms of limitation periods, and the drafting of legal documents and correspondence.
This position requires advanced level computer skills, including MS Word, Powerpoint, and Excel. Experience working with corporate legal computer software and websites would be an asset. The incumbent must have excellent analytical, organizational, time management and multitasking skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines. Extreme discretion and the highest levels of integrity, trust and maturity, attention to detail and good judgment, high level of initiative, excellent comprehension of legal terminology, and an ability to interact well with people at all levels of the University are essential.
