Academic Success Tips:  Reading & Note Taking

New students often find it challenging taking clear, detailed, and organized notes before and during class. Taking effective notes will help you improve your marks and become a more engaged learner in the classroom. Here are tips you can use when your classes begin in September:

1. Do your assigned readings before every class
- Readings provide a foundation of knowledge before the lecture. When you complete a reading before class, you are better able to focus, understand, and contribute during the lecture.

2. Before you begin your readings, survey the chapter
- Pay attention to any charts, bold texts, and headings in the chapter.
- Read the summary questions at the end of the chapter, to help you focus on the key areas in the chapter when you read.

3. Use active, not passive reading
- Take notes in your own words, instead of just highlighting what you read.
- Write down questions that you have as you read. This helps you stay engaged and think critically about the material. It also helps you identify any gaps in your understanding.

4. Come prepared to class with all materials
- Bring a pen, notebook/laptop, notes from your readings, printed slides (if provided by the professor), water, and snacks (if allowed by the professor).

5. Eliminate distractions
Choose a seat close to the front and in the centre of the room.
- Put your cell phone on silent and stow it in your backpack
- Close any unrelated programs and tabs on your laptop, and sit up straight..

6. Use critical thinking as you take notes
- Most students will try to write down everything that the professor says. This is often not effective and can be very challenging. Instead, try to summarize the key points from the lecture and write down questions that relate the material to other concepts and ideas from the class.
- An excellent note taking technique is called Cornell Notes. Visit the Student Success Centre for more information on how to take Cornell Notes.

7. After class, review and rewrite your notes
- This is an excellent way to strengthen your understanding of the material and ensure you are not missing any key information from the lecture. It will also help you remember what you’ve learned, which means you won’t have to learn it again during your exam review.

Following these steps will help you stay on track with your course material throughout the semester. They are simple habits to adopt, which will lower your stress, help you enjoy your classes, and boost your grades.
