Why Attend Orientation?

Registration is now open for “Thunderwolves Howl: Ignite Your Adventure” Orientation 2019! Not sure how interested you are? Keep reading to find out why we LOVE Orientation and hope you’ll take part.

WHY ATTEND ORIENTATION?

We've broken down the answer into four reasons...

Welcome.

Orientation is our chance to welcome you to both the Lakehead and Thunder Bay/Orillia communities. This is going to be your home away from home for the next few years and we want to make sure you are well aware of what your community has to offer.

Connect.

Participating in Orientation will give you the chance to make friends and connect with other students who are new to campus. Orientation will also be a chance to connect with Lakehead staff, faculty, and upper year students to learn more about our campus support services and how to get involved.

Prepare.

Orientation is more than an opportunity to make new friends; it's also a time to prepare for the semester ahead. Orientation will provide you with the opportunity to learn new tips and tricks and develop academic skills that will help you succeed during your first few weeks of classes.

Belong.

Orientation is the beginning of your Lakehead journey. You chose Lakehead for a reason and Orientation is the perfect time to begin exploring and creating your own #LakeheadAdventure.

Are you an International student?

Before the main event begins, International Student Orientation is your introduction to Lakehead University and your new community. It's not only an opportunity to learn about the services that are available to help you succeed, but it's also a chance to meet your peers, teachers, and have some fun. Orientation is an essential element for new International students and it is required that you make every possible arrangement to attend.

International Student Orientation is a full day event and will take place on August 28th. We encourage all International Students to extend their Orientation experience by participating in the main campus Orientation for all students, August 29 - 31.

Academic Success: TIME MANAGEMENT

Pursuing your academic goals, while also balancing work, sports/hobbies, and a social life can be challenging, but also rewarding. With the right effort and attitude, time management is a skill that can be learned.

A monthly calendar is a tool you can use to stay on track with all of your tasks and priorities. For your calendar to be effective, you must include every commitment and upcoming deadlines. It also must be reviewed and updated daily. Here are a few options for monthly calendars:

  • Dry Erase: Lakehead four month wall calendars are available at your campus bookstore!
  • Notebook-style: Pick-up a day planner from your campus bookstore or any local office supply store.
  • Electronic: As a Lakehead student, you have access to Google Calendar.

The Student Success Centre strongly recommends using Google Calendar. Electronic calendars are easy to adjust, available at all times, and can't be lost or forgotten.

  • To access the Google Calendar app, click on the nine small boxes on the top right corner when logged into your Lakehead email.
  • You can also download the Google Calendar App on your phone which will allow you to review and update your calendar on the go. The Google Calendar App is available in the Google Play store and the Apple App store.
  • To learn more about how to get started using your Google Calendar, click here!

Pro-Tip: You can sync your course timetable with your Google Calendar. If you haven't registered for your courses, please check Issue 2 of Wolfie's Weekly Adventures pronto for more information on how to get that done.

Time Management is something that everyone can improve upon! For more strategies and resources to help you effectively manage your time, book an appointment with a Student Success Advisor in the SSC. If you start off organized, you'll stay organized throughout the term.

Campus Connections

In our last issue you heard more about the Student Success Centre (SSC) and were also introduced to Student Central. In this week’s issue, we’re here to tell you about Student Accessibility Services along with Student Health and Wellness

  • Student Accessibility Services (SAS) supports students with physical and learning disabilities and/or medical conditions (including mental health conditions). SAS assists students during their transition to university and offers academic strategies and accommodations which enable them to overcome barriers while completing their degree.
  • At Student Health and Wellness, students can book appointments with trained mental health professionals to receive help with many personal challenges including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, sleep problems, and body image issues. We have a highly trained team of physicians, nurses, and counsellors for both full-time and part-time students enrolled at Lakehead University.

Wondering what to do with yourself when you're not in class or doing schoolwork? Here are Wolfie's Top 5 suggestions for ways to connect and have fun!

  1. Get involved with LUSU. There are several ways that students can become involved with the Lakehead University Student Union. Check out their diverse student clubs and societies, or consider taking on a leadership role. This is a fantastic way to explore your interests, develop leadership skills, and meet people from a wide variety of programs. Click here for info.
  2. Get involved with Athletics and Recreation. Both Lakehead campuses offer several ways to engage with the Department of Athletics and Recreation. Sports are organized at the varsity, extramural, and intramural level, in addition to a fantastic lineup of campus recreational activities. Be sure to cheer on your Thunderwolves at home games throughout the year! Click here and here for more information.
  3. Work on campus. Looking to make some extra cash? Working on campus is an excellent way to become involved on campus and develop your professional skills. Many offices and academic departments hire students throughout the year - be sure to check out MySuccess on a regular basis for upcoming opportunities. Need resume and cover letter support? Come see us at the SSC!
  4. Explore the community. While campus is a beautiful place to spend your time, it's important to engage with your community. Be sure to explore the beautiful cities of Thunder Bay and Orillia and their surrounding areas. Volunteering is an excellent way to learn more about your community! Not sure where to look for these opportunities? The SSC can help!
  5. Develop your skills. At Lakehead, you will have ample opportunity to develop important skills outside the classroom. Take advantage of professional development on campus opportunities and contribute to and get involved with EXCEL Leadership and the Student Ambassador program through the Student Success Centre.
