Health insurance can be confusing. This page provides some general information and links.
Provincial & International Plan Coverage
Bring your provincial health insurance card/form with you to school. Ensure that you acquire your health insurance card from your parents or guardians-you will require it to access health care from such sources as a doctor at the on-campus Centre or a walk-in clinic.
Provincial and International health insurance plans usually cover most medical care in doctor's offices, lab and x-ray facilities, and hospitals. To learn more about what is covered and what you need to know about the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), please visit this Government of Ontario website.
Residents from other provinces* can use their provincial health card plan in Ontario to access health care. However, be sure to check with your provincial provider for any requirements needed to continue your coverage while at school for an extended period.
*Residents from Quebec will be asked to fill out an insurance form at each and every health care visit. Quebec students will be billed directly for lab work done by LifeLabs - contact your provincial health office regarding any reimbursement.
For information on International student plans such as the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP), please speak with Financial Services department or visit the Lakehead International website.
Proof of current provincial or international health plan overage is required each and every time you visit the Centre (or any other health care facility, barring emergencies).
Please note that your appointment may be rescheduled or a charge may be levied at the Centre if you do NOT have proof of valid health insurance. Payment methods for such a charge include Debit, MasterCard, or Visa.
Exceptions in Coverage (Health Services)
Some services are not covered by provincial/international health insurance plans; any associated fees not covered are payable at the time of your appointment. These services include: third party physicals (i.e., for jobs or travel), completion of medical forms, liquid nitrogen treatments to hands, and transfers/copying of charts. Payment methods for these charges include Debit, MasterCard or Visa. Please see the Ministry website for more information
Exceptions in Coverage (Counselling Services)
Some services are not covered and any associated fees not covered are payable at the time of your appointment. These services include: transfers/copying of charts. Payment methods for these charges include Debit, MasterCard or Visa.
Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) Health & Dental Plan
The LUSU Health & Dental Plan fee is levied and managed by the Student Union to assist with prescription costs, non-medical professional services (i.e. massage therapy), etc. for students. Talk to LUSU about details of the plan or for "opt-out" information.
The Centre's health services and the LUSU Health & Dental Plan are supported by two separate ancillary fees. Opting out of the LUSU plan does not impact access to the Centre.
